Tundra’s have very little of the full sized market. Why would they even go after an even smaller market. Besides, most people who run a full sized diesel will want to go with the big 3.

That being said the only diesels that really sell are in the heavy duty market. Didn’t Ram pull the eco diesel? The F150 diesel isn’t selling like hot cakes. Nissan had huge discounts 10k+ off I remember when I still worked at an auto group on the Titans just to move inventory. How good are they Colorado diesels selling? Probably not very good at all. It’s a very niche market, and I doubt you’ll see toyota enter it. They will be focused on Hybrid/electric as the big 3 are focused/already in the works with their pickups.

Nope, my hopes have not changed one bit. I am a diesel mechanic so a diesel is a diesel and nothing scares me. If one will comes in a future Tundra then lets see it. I actually work for Caterpillar and I do believe in the Cummins engine. Some are a bit quirky but nothing I couldn't work on.

Unblock them if the US emissions regulations change. I'd be up for a pre-2006 no egr/no $3000 emsiis
    Larry:

    You statement is correct....however....

The diesel market for pre 2006 emission Duramax and Cummins and pre 2004 Ford power strokes is insane. Top dollar for high mileage trucks with no modern safety features or amenities....hmmm.

The market for post 2006 diesel engines that do not have DEF and that can be easily modified to kill regens (unplugging the EGR) is also good....not as nuts, but still good.

Take the modern expensive and costly to maintain emissions systems with their efficiency and relaibility robbing engineering off of the US diesel and the market will return.

As a mechanic you know the difference between the Cummins in the Titan and the Cummins in the Ram? The Cummins in the Ram has never, ever been discussed as even a rumor in the Tundra. Never.

And you're aware of what a dud the ISV5.0 is? It's design sucks. Your ability to wrench on a diesel won't change that. It's a completely different engine than the B series - right?

And you're aware that these rumors have been humping around for five years?

All well aware of all you mention. However, I will not discount the fact that the possibility is their and may happen. and if doesn't by the time I'm ready to trade in my Tacoma, then I will get out of Toyota completely and move into a Ram.

True. Most people hate the new emissions crap. But most buyers that need diesels (commercial, business) aren’t looking for preowned. They want new. Want the write off, the warranty and want to get several years out of them atleast. Plus newer diesels make way more power/torque. The entire truck is a lot more capable.

Used market might be hot. But a lot of that reason is coal bro’s, can roll coal and afford a used diesel. They can’t afford a loaded up one that’s ~70k brand new, plus the money for a lift, wheels and tires, and all the other stuff to help compensate for their other misfortunes.

As a current owner of a personal Ram 2500 with the Cummins and a fleet of work truck with the same driveline, I would caution you to think really hard about moving to a Ram

I'd prefer a Big Cam IV Cummins. Nothing wrong with a Cat.

I've driven diesel Hilux overseas and liked them. Abolish the EPA!

I really miss the CAT 3208, too bad they no longer exist, new at least. They are the holly grail of cat motors. I have worked on many in my 25 year career, and I still see them every now and then.

Have you actually had diesel or are you just wishing like the rest of us?

Diesel is not easy to buy (instant $5000-10000 premium), it's not easy to run (if you want your warranty and don't want to get caught by the relevant emissions authorities), and it's not easy to maintain. Yes, good diesels like the 5.9 12V and certain 6.6 Dmaxes are million mile contenders, but the 3UR has already made it to 1 million miles in 2 very highly publicized trucks. Before you object that the 5.7 abysmal fuel economy, neither are any of the well known diesels outstandingly good at that, and your savings gets quickly washed away with your first maintenance or repair. The 5.7 just requires the regular care and that's it. The diesel life requires a lot of commitment if you actually care about your truck.

The 2.8 LWN is a very good fit for the Collie. But being North American, it already suffers (though mostly due to its health uncertainty 5 years down the line) in comparison to its global twin on account of emissions. Of course, you can delete and tune out EGR with a GDE tune, but there have been a few examples of blown LWNs, including tuned ones. You're out of warranty due to delete, with a motor that's not nearly as understood as a 12V or LB7 (forum thread devolved into engine oil shit flinging).

None of that is consistent with Toyota's reputation for reliability. Especially not the dumpster fire that is the TitanXD's 5.0 ISV. Cummins should be ashamed that its name is displayed on an engine with the reliability of a 6.d'oh.

I would disagree. The last time I was in Europe (2016) there were more diesel engined cars and SUVs than there were gas. Their emissions standards aren't as restrictive as ours so diesels make sense.

I also noticed there are a lot more people smoking cigs in Europe compared to here.

Toyota will probably do something similar like Nissan did with their trucks and SUVS back when they all shared the F Alpha platforms. They all Pathfinder, Xterra, Frontier, Armada, And Titan all shared similar frames with each other. Just a thought.

Diesel Tacoma is gay just get a full size gas or diesel if you need that in a truck, why would you need a small diesel truck? So you can pay out your ass for maintenance?

How about a twin turbo V6 they’re offering in the next tundra? Why does no one want that in the next Tacoma? That’s what I’d bust my nuts over

Yeah I hope to get a 2020 Taco and then after that I expect my next truck to be electric. Would love to get a Rivian R1T but they are too much for me right now. Hopefully by the time I'm ready to buy again they are down to "normal" truck prices.

Oh lordy, here we go again...

Diesel mid size is not practical in the current US market. Makes more sense overseas.
