Audi has an A6 with a V6 Atkinson Cycle cylinder head engine similar to the Tacoma. To address the anemic power at lower rpms that these types of engines possess, they have added twin turbos and then some: a mild hybrid where the 2 electric motors come in to play when taking off from a stop. The electric motors also take over and shut the gas engine off when cruising at highway speeds.

Not much reasonable speculation on a Tacoma redesign. I agree it will probably be a minor redesign, either utilizing a turbo or hybrid. The main goal will be gas mileage, not power. There’s no pressure to build a larger (or smaller) truck, more power, faster, etc. etc. It is what it is and it sells very well. Why fix what ain’t broke?

There is a lot of misinformation about diesel especially in Europe. The reason diesel is unsuccessful here is not mainly due to the EPA, it’s due to the higher costs and especially higher taxes for diesel. (I lived in Germany in the 90’s.) In Europe the situation is the opposite, and governments have been pushing diesel for decades. Things are changing over there, but contrary to some opinion, diesel is not “dead”—sales are down (especially in Britain) but mainly taken over by EV and hybrid. There is no sentiment for more ICE over there in Europe instead of diesel—when gas costs 2-3 times the American cost, MPG is paramount.

I have had a diesel—Mercedes 3L TD in my RV. It was reliable, powerful, clean-burning, got great mileage for an RV, and no major maintenance. (DEF is cheap and a piece of cake to replenish. Why people obsess over this is beyond me.) With petrol prices being as cheap as they are now (relatively), diesel is not as big a draw in the RV market as it used to be, but I’d prefer it over petrol any day.

All that said, there is just no market for a smaller diesel truck like the HiLux. The HiLux 0-60 is 10 seconds!! Nobody who doesn’t haul stuff for a living would put up with that, if you do do haul you will want a bigger truck.

The cost of diesel isn’t turning off dedicated buyers....it’s the loss of efficiency and extra expenses associated with the trouble prone emissions systems. Again, people are paying outrageous prices for pre dpf/egr diesels....and it has nothing to do with the roll coal crowd but everything to do with returning to the days of simple, reliable diesels.

Is that the EPAs fault? Not really. Manufacturers had a captive consumer base with heavy industry and has used us all as guinea pigs for their half baked emissions ideas. We’ve had some horrible treatment systems forced down our throats.

Again, adding def isn’t an issue, it’s the lack of reliability of these injection systems, the cost to service and the cost to eventually replace them.

As other options become more viable, these emission systems will become less complex and not effect the performance and longevity of these motors as much. We had a tech talk with Cummins and the next wave of emission systems are eliminating egr and focusing on more simplified SCR. Once they work the bugs out of these new systems, diesel may become more attractive to the American buyer.

There’s a company that figured out how to make a MT work with hybrid platforms. Forgot the name, but did some researching a while back... so there’s hope, if that’s the route they go with the new power train.

Honda sold CR-Z hybrids with a manual. From what I read the stick killed almost all the efficiency.

Except the 3rd gen is different in the door framing, suspension (heavier coils), engine, bed and tires exterior dimensions and weighs 300lbs more in the front than the 2nd gen...besides that probably the same

I doubt we will see a diesel in the Tacoma. Have they tried it? Probably, hence the rumors about it for years. Toyota has committed to electrification of every model in their lineup by 2025. That means we will most likely see hybrid Tacoma's and Tundra's very soon. There has already been a spotting of the new Tundra under heavy camo and I would expect it for the 2021MY. A new tacoma seems more likely for the 2023MY or later. I really want a plug in hybrid tacoma, to be able to commute on electric power but then take it on long road trips and into the backcountry on gas seems like the perfect combo. I am likely going to purchase a 4th gen Tacoma so hopefully they do electrification and don't make it any larger!

I really wish Toyota could come up with a truck the size of a Tacoma with the cabin space of a Tundra.;)
I read an article that stated the MT makes up roughly 5% of total Tacoma sales. Even worse for their other vehicles and the 2020 Supra at this time does not even offer one.

    https://www.autoblog.com/2019/05/15/toyota-manual-transmission-sales-figures/

I think the only way it will continue to be offered is if Toyota determines the buyer of MT only purchased a Tacoma because it is the only truck in its class that offers one (edit: both Frontier and Gladiator offer one). Even then, only if it offsets the cost of development and production.

Diesel is cheaper here. My 2014 VW golf Tdi has almost as much tourque as the Tacoma with only 140 Hp
    240 vs 276
    Getting 900 km / 560 miles on a $45 tank is awesome

I would love to see a twin turbo V6 Tacoma. I am sold on turbos.
That would make me come back to the brand. It seems Toyota has a redesign every 10 years...so 2026 should be the new one. I'll wait.
    With fuel @ $2.39 I don't see the need for a diesel.

I don’t doubt what you’re saying, especially from the commercial side. However, I think for the average consumer he/she just looks at simple metrics. The Colorado (for example) costs $6000 more for a turbodiesel than a 3.6L petrol with a similar towing capacity (DCSB). Of course it gets 3 mph better gas mileage (23 vs 20). 0-60 is 8.5 seconds vs 7.2 seconds. In NE diesel is about $0.20 more expensive than petrol. So I don’t think the numbers would persuade the average buyer to go diesel.

As long as petrol is relatively cheap, there’s no impetus for diesel among consumer cars and trucks.

I too would like a tt V6 Taco, not the first years of course. I’m still skeptical of them (I don’t feel like there is enough time with them) but I have faith in Toyota’s quality assurance.

Buying a diesel is like buying points to finance a mortgage. You definitely have to do a cost comparison analysis to determine if you will actually save money.
