    Sounds like ejector not extractor.

    http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_118/393500_.html

    I'd check both though.

Make sure the insert under the extractor, in the spring, isn't crumbled and is there. Should be blue or black. Check the extractor edge.

    So, it pulls straight back?

Does the casing / round tilt one way or another when the bolt is all the way to the rear?

Or.. does it just pull it out and push straight back in?

    ejector spring

Slip the rim of a casing under the extractor lip and rotate it down into the bolt face, there should be a lot of resistance from the ejector to push it towards the extractor.

I'm wondering if the spring for the extractor fell out / broke / exploded / went "runnoft"

If it's pulling the case out of the chamber but not throwing the case out of the rifle then the extractor spring should still be present and sounds like extractor is behaving normally. To me it sounds like a failure to EJECT rather than extract.

Which would point to ejector in my mind or apparently a short stroke but I'm not so sure on the latter.

    http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_66/210213_.html

Seems like a pretty rare problem.

Whats the rim of the casings look like after fired?

FtEj is often a sign of a short stroke; check that the ejector fully telescopes under the bolt face. The ejector spring should be VERY stiff. The ejector spring is, should be, the same spring as the one used under the selector detent, consider it a spare.

I'm thinking the ejector is bound up somehow.

    If it's short stroking though...

    To test for short stroking:

    Lube rifle properly.
    Take several mags (like 10).
Load each magazine with only 1 round.
Load one of the magazine into the rifle and chamber the round. Fire the round. Did the bolt lock back?
Try this several times. Does it lock back each time?

So you didn't take the bolt apart? Just the BCG right? That's your ejector spring. I think your ejector roll pin and ejector launched themselves.

Good call on proper terminology. "extract vs eject" I just pulled my spring off my extractor and it still worked fine. I guess I'm out of this one...

Dont worry about what it is, just call dpms and take it up with them. But it sounds like a bolt head issue. DPMS is not quite the quality they used to be but should fix the problem without any problem. You may try putting a drop of oil on ejector and see if that fixes it.

Well... it should be inside the bolt. The bolt being housed in the BCG.

That spring should be behind the ejector, and all of it retained by a small roll pin.

It shouldn't just fall out unless you've removed the roll pin/ejector.

Certainly shouldn't be loose unless you've removed it.
