Just joined up with Tacoma World. I'm based in a small town in South Western Montana. I've got two 1999 base model Tacoma's. Both are 4wd, 5 speed Manual, 2.7 liter engines. One is running strong with 255k miles. The other has 296k miles with issues, which is why I joined up. I do most of my own maintenance and need to pick some brains on how to get 296k back on the road, if possible, or maybe just part it out.

The dang thing will not start. It turns over but I've not got it to start since last November. I've got spark to every cylinder and can smell gas when I try to start and when I pull the plugs. Either is not starting it. I replaced the fuel filter, no go. I swapped the EFI fuses. 255k still runs, 296 still no go. Compression test was disappointing, low and uneven compression. #1 145, #2 125, #3 125, #4 80. I took the compression after pouring a little Marvel Mystery Oil in each cylinder. Any ideas out there in Tacoma World. Thanks

I've never adjusted valve clearance on either Tacoma. I watched a couple you tube videos and am going to attempt it. Looks pretty easy on the vids.
I'll purchase the recommended tools to depress and hold the bucket in place to access shims. The whole process actually looks interesting. I'll be able to check out the timing chain and guide as well as other stuff.
    Thanks for the welcome replies!
