Are you going to get your consealed carry permit? I have a S&W 9mm 3.5" barrel not the best consealed carry gun. Just something else to think about

I have this before, and it's the trigger being to heavy...I have the lighter trigger pull version. I love this gun and wouldn't trade it for the world, it's nice to have it cocked and locked...

Oh only that it's not a .40 and they are the BEST 1911 in the world (again my biased opinion). I picked this one up for $699 new from a local shop.

Kimbers are good, though you'll hear people say they are not the most reliable. I own 3 and carry 1 of them. All have been flawless.

The P229 .40 is an excellent gun. Depending on your body size it may or may not be a hard gun to conceal. I own a P229 .40 w/ rail and a P229 Elite Stainless .40. I carry mine in the winter only where the larger grip and DA/SA action are better if using gloved hands.

If you can spring the extra cash I highly recommend the models with the improved short reset triggers. Most of my handgun experience is with 1911s and I had some trouble adjusting to the Sigs longer trigger reset. I would twitch my finger at matches and the gun wouldn't fire because I wasn't letting off enough to reset the trigger. Nothing practice didn't fix but the short reset triggers are very crisp and are a huge improvement. Much easier to transition from 1911s and back.

The P229 Elite Stainless is a brick of a gun but the extra weight of the stainless steel frame totally soaks up the recoil and follow up shots are very very easy to put on target.

Oh I see, well Kimber doesn't make a .40 call gun, I know they have a 10mm but I don't think the two are cross compatible ammo.

I love my 1911 Custom II it one of my favorite guns to shoot. Do you have any gun shows around you? That's the best place to pick up ammo and guns for a good price. Usually no tax and sellers are open to haggling.

we have them occasionally? Do they have to do the backgroud checks etc, at shows?? or are they considered private sales?

Here in AZ if they are a dealer with an FFL there is the standard 4473 background check and registration. But if it's just a private guy, then we don't have to do all that "paper work," at most a private seller will ask you to sign a bill of sale. But I don't know your laws where you live so I can't say for sure. The best thing to do would be to find a local shooting board and ask some of them or go into a gun shop, they will know too.

Yeah i know as a dealer we had a background federal questionaire that got called in and could sell it as soon as it was "approved"...but it "could" take up to 3 days to get a response...I never had to do it...When ever i called in the form it was instant approval...

I was just curious how gun shows worked.

You may want to check out the Sig P250 which is within your price range. You can get it in 9,.40, or .45 for around $500!

I got the Ultra II. It's a very finely built gun but prepare to spend about extra $200 breaking it in (cost of 45ACP rounds.) Once it's broken in, it's flawless and very very accurate but you will have problems in the begining due to extremely tight tolerences (trait of all quality guns.)

If you want something that works great from the start, get the XD. I'd go with the compact 45 since it comes with an extended clip that makes you have a choice between a service size and still allows you to have it portable if needed. 9mm is cheap and somewhat effective, but 45s are just great for knock down power.

I used to own one and they are incredibly reliable. Never a jam. However, do get the trigger pull adjusted if you decide to get a Glock. Factory trigger pull is very heavy, which means you won't be able to get an accurate shot.

I have a glock, and it's great but I had a hard time with concealment because it's so thick and blocky. So the glock is now in my nightstand and I carry my springfield 1911 as my ccw.

My advice would be to pick one based on the purpose it's going to be used for. If it's going to be a ccw then I'd pick the one that's easiest/most comfortable to carry concealed.

.45 ACP was ideally my first choice but...
Yeah i wont be doing a Kimber I dont think, because I want a .40...(free ammo)

I was reading over bullistics of the .40 S&W vs. .45 ACP obviously the .45 has more power but the .40 really seems to take the cake when comparing price, accuracy & stopping power...It will really incapacitate an attacker...(most guns will anyways) but the .40 gets all the accuracy of a 9mm but with the stopping power of a .45...Don't get me wrong most guns are going to get the job done, but because 1 reason i want this firearm around is for personal protection i was looking at the "stopping" power...

The .40 and .45 can really knock a human out due to hydrostatic shock factor...where most 9mm loads arn't quite there from what i was reading...If i was doing alot more shooting and spending time at the range i would go 9mm all the way.

And if i had acces to free .45 ammo well you knwo the story.

    A .45 will stop a charging meth addict. A 9mm will not.
Funny, but there was a story on the local news last week where a police officer shot a suspected meth addict once in the chest with a .40. Instead of falling down, the suspect began running away! then they tasered him and he still resisted.
