If i were you i would just save an extra hundred bucks and go for the .40 XD-M. Thats the next gun on my list. I already own a Taurus 9mm. Picked it up used for 200 bucks and am pretty happy with it.

Given the OP's original post, I would recommend the Glock 22. Easy to maintain and spare parts are easily obtained.

Just wondering why you dont feel comfortable with the glock and one in the chamber? I have never had any problems. I hope its not due to the lack of a manual safety. The only safety that works 100% of the time is trigger discipline.

wasnt there a guy recently that shot himslef in a night club because his gun went off in his pants?

but that was due to the improper use of secureing it right? and what do you mean by manual safety on the glocks? how does it get to be safe? soe s it have an internal deal?

First off, that story about the dude shooting himself in the club was BS. He had a double action only pistol, no way he could have accidently pulled the trigger while trying to stop it from sliding down his pant leg. Outside people did tests on that and showed he was full of shit.

The glocks only have a trigger safety. You must have your finger on the trigger in order for the safety to disengage. They do not have a traditional manual safety like most semi autos. One better is the XD which has the grip safety.

I would never carry a gun for defensive perposes WITHOUT having a round in the chamber. You need to be ready to draw, point, and shoot in an instant. You cannot waste precious time by chambering a round.

Big Sig fan here as well. But the 229 pictured is not DOA. That center lever is a decocker. A DOA weapon can never have it's hammer remain in the cocked position, so this lever wouldn't be needed. Classic sigs can be found in nearly any configuration, but most are SA/DA.

To the OP, Certified Pre Owned P229s can be found for $500-$600 and are the tits - factory reconditioned and bombproof. You WILL come across a fair few CPO P229s in the DAO flavor as many were service weapons.

Best advice I can give you is to put each gun in your hands. Second, decide what is it's primary purpose-concealed carry, range gun, left in your truck, etc. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, what do you like better DA or SA/DA.

DA is harder to shoot well, especially as a novice because of long, heavy trigger pulls. SA/DA is easier b/c after that first shot, it is a lighter, more consistent pull.
For my money, I choose Glock for many reasons but I'll highlight a few: Reliablility. Hands down I know when I pull the trigger, it will fire. Fit, glocks fit my hand and point easily for me. Lastly, as an experienced pistol shooter, I prefer DA because every single shot out of your pistol is exactly the same. Every time I pull the trigger, it's the same weigh. Consistency leads to accuracy.

I have shot both the XD and the Glock 40 Cals. The XD has alot of great features. I went with the Glock because of the fit to my hand. The XD's center of the bore is slightly higher in my hand than the glock which equates to more muzzle rise in rapid fire.

    Hope this helps...

My buddy who is a cop is coming up this weekend and he is bringing his Sig P229... So...Right now i am leaning strongly towards the HK and Sig...local gun shop has about 4 Used SIG P229 for sale...2 of them are unfired and tehy are asking around $700 for them. But i am afraid teh 229 is to small...Idealy i woudl want the 226

I have an xd40 and love it, I also have a issued p2000, it's ok, I'm not that big into guns so I don't really care (it was free) but my xd is great. All my co-workers like glocks though

I just sold my Browning HiPower as I was not shooting it much anymore, my XD9 is a tack driver and it is a bone stock duty gun.
I have shot several Sigs, 40's, 9's and a .22 (P210) finest .22 on the market hands down. You won't go wrong with a Sig.
Glock, most LEO's carry Glock, nuff said.
    Never shot a HK.
