New Here and Thinking of Purchasing Our First Tacoma

    Hi everyone.

I'm a 40 something guy in Alabama, married with two mid-teens, and I have over 20 years in the fire service.

We are debating trading our Honda Pilot Touring on a 4WD Double Cab Tacoma with the TRD Off Road package. We have never warmed up to the Pilot and I hate that stupid VCM system. It drives me nuts to have a $40,000 vehicle that stutters to try to gain MPG.

I have always liked the looks and reputation of the Tacoma, and this will be the wife's daily driver and our primary ride. We have a 2001 Tahoe that serves well as a backup and trip vehicle, even with 160,000 miles on it. It may become my teen son's first vehicle, which should put it to the test, LOL.

The biggest kid is 5'8' and 180 lbs or so, so will the Taco have enough room for the occasional short trip, which will be fewer and farther between the older they get? The wife and I are both under 5'8".

What do y'all think of the Taco as a daily driver for the wife? She likes the truck, but has never driven one daily. Her daily drive is less than 10 miles on average. She's a crafter too. She likes to buy wood for crafts and whatnot, and, much to my chagrin, do home improvement stuff. ;)

Any suggestions or advice is appreciated.

They are great trucks. Obviously we may be a little biased here but as far as comfort goes I'd say they are pretty nice. I drive an extra cab and would definitely go with a double if I had the chance. They can be a little tight in the back seat but keep in mind that it IS a mid sized truck. I'm 6' and I can manage to squeeze into the back seat of a double cab. My knees hit the front seats but if you and your wife are comfortable pulling the seats forward a click or 2 there should be enough room for your 2 kids in the back and you and your spouse up front. Overall I'd say you won't be disappointed.

    Thanks.

This will likely be the last new car we buy, as I'm less than 5 years from retirement eligibility. By the time I get there, the kids will be out of school, and probably in their own rides, so the room question is only for a couple of years or so, most likely.

I just like the idea of a durable, reliable vehicle that the wife and I both like. We don't need the 8 passenger Pilot.

Im 5'9 190lbs and I easy sit in the front and back with no problems. I have a 05 4x4 SR5 Dbl Cab long bed, I love it. With the stock set up I had more power than I ever needed and decent 20MPG, Ive since put a lift/tires on and noticed a small drop in performance and 18MPG, on normal driving habits, But still has great amount of punch it and go power.

Oh and its beats the shit out of my Sluggish 4x4 3.4L 4Runner(but I still love her) :)

    .
Welcome, yeah, we're biased here of course and we can't say enough about our trucks but I would think a Tacoma is gonna be a lot more useful going forwards.

Welcome. I'm 6' and have no problems in the front or the back. I do allot of road trips for snowboarding and have my grown ass friends in the back all the time for these long trips. Have yet to receive any complaints on room in the back. Great truck!
