My wife and I are thinking of trading our 2010 Golf TDI for a 2010 Tacoma double cab TRD Sport. We also currently own a 1998 4Runner which is our second 4Runner, Previous to this one we had a 1995, so we're not new to Toyota 4X4's by any means.

I know that the only thing I'll be giving up is fuel economy which is ok with me. Its just that we need something bigger with a bed on it and some degree of off capability plus we want to tow a small horse trailer as well.

I'm just wondering if this is a good deal. Also wondering what issues the 2nd gens had. Anything major I should worry about with this many km's on it? What questions should I be asking the sales person? We're going there this week so I hope I can learn enough in time to ask the right questions. What should I be offering them? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Seems a little much for a pre-runner with 73k miles on it ( to me anyway). I don't know different the pricing is in CA though.

It looks lifted also, at least in the rear but that front bumper may be weighing the front suspension down.

I wouldn't buy anything that's modded. It was modded to their taste. If I see a truck with a bumper (there was obviously a winch in there at one time), lift and wheels/tires like that it means the truck was probably used pretty hard. Asking questions like "what should I look for?" doesn't work in this case because this is not a stock truck.

I understand in any normal circumstance that one would stay away from a truck like this. Seeing as this is oil country pretty much every work truck is jacked up. Most of the places you need to go are pretty muddy and it helps to have a lifted truck.

I can live with the fact that this used to be a work truck and can almost guarantee that most of the kilometers were highway. What I was told by the sales guy was that the guys warranty ran out and the owner traded it in for a 2012. This makes sence to me. Now they'll turn around and sell it with some kind of a used car warranty.

Ok so what would you guys offer for this? I know there are other Tacoma trucks on the lot but this one is actually done to my taste and I like the look of it.

I read somewhere that the 6spd was more problematic than the 5spd, is this true? I read complaints of geartrain noise, well this is to be expected from a truck with so many KM's

Should I make a lowball offer and go from there?

Well tonight we went to see it up close and took it for a test drive. Everything is in good working order. We got a good appraisal on our trade in (2010 VW Golf TDI) so we went ahead with the deal.

The dealer is throwing in 3M on the headlights, A pillars and roof just above the windshield as well as weather tech floor mats since our car has them. The bed is sprayed with liner so that is one less thing we'll have to do.

I looked up close and the suspension lift is from Toytec. Spacers on the front and add a leaf on the rear along with bilstien shocks/struts. That ARB front bumper is solid.

We should be finalizing everything this weekend. Hope all goes well.

Yeah I compared it to another one they had on the lot.

The previous owner had 15K in to it apparently if you factor in the rims, liner, floor mats, tires, ARB bumper, lift kit and so on. On one hand I don't believe it on the other I know how much stuff added up to on my 4runner and I did the labor. So its sort of believable.

And being an Alberta vehicle I dont worry about rust, there is none underneath. Frame is still powder coated black from the factory.

I only see about $3-4k in the truck...$5k with labor.

1" lift from 3rd gen suspension, 265/75/16 ATs
It's 4x4, not pre-runner. Prices are unfortunately a lot higher in Canada compared to US.

That is what I was figuring. Still, I don't have to do any of it or pay for his losses.
