Just do a Search for Howling and you will see plenty of issues.

I'm a 2nd gen Tacoma owner thinking about a 3rd gen and I've been reading up here. For me, there is really only one "issue" and that is the howling differentials that Toyota calls a characteristic. By contrast, a small number of owners of the GM twins have reported a similar issue, and GM swapped out the pinion or the whole differential. I'm waiting to see how this one plays out.

The other things are "drivability" issues. You should take a long test drive in the configuration you want, and if you like the way everything feels, buy one. Maybe test drive the twins for a comparison. If you notice things you don't like, don't buy.

Plenty of members have reported leaking rear diffs on OR models despite not being on the recall list. Speculation is that Toyota will be expanding the recall soon. Also howling issues.

The "howling" ppk complain about is either harmonics created by holes in the LCA or the Carrier bearing frequency.

The Rear Diff Howling has absolutely nothing to do with the Whistling Sound that the Lower A Arms used to make, mine even came plugged from the Factory.

2 coworkers bought 2016's when they came out. Both love the truck and have had none of the issues that are being so widely reported. Unhappy customers are the most vocal, always remember that.

    Carrier bearing. In my opinion.

Mine came plugged from the factory as well. 2017 OR and my howling can be heard with sat radio volume at 38. My rear diff is dry with no leaks yet it is clearly howling. It starts around 1000 miles and I'm at 2900. Around 2000 miles it started to sound louder (to my ear) so I started tracking it with the radio volume just to make sure it wasn't me just thinking it was louder. My kids here are it without me saying a word about it.

Yes. I have a howl at around 45-55 mph and light throttle. My rear end seeps fluid as well but my fluid level never really drops.

If I were trying to decide whether to buy a Tacoma or not TW would be the last place I'd go to try and make my decision. If you go to any enthusiast site you're going to find too many people on the far end of either side of the spectrum to make a good decision for yourself.

If you own one and need to look for tips, fixes, people to wheel with then TW is a great resource. If you're looking for a reason or not to buy one you're going to get too many biased opinions here.

OP, decide what you need the truck to do then cross shop all brands and models to see what best fits your needs. A Tacoma is a very popular truck and can do a lot of things well but it can't do everything and it's certainly not perfect.

 definitely bait... don't fall for it. Happens to the best of us.

I herd from a good source there's going to be a rocket launcher addition, good for close up duty & under bridge shots.

True that.... and notice the most negative feedback coming from the few owners that have had issues. Happy owners generally don't complain....
