Hi all. I'm a three time Jeep Grand Cherokee owner, but am now giving serious thought to moving to a Tacoma. What did it? $4 per gallon gas and at best 10 mpg on my 4.7L V8 4x4 JGC when towing a 3,000 lb trailer has pushed me into the market. Empty nester too, and rarely need all the seats anymore. Been doing some comparisons of new midsize pickups (Colorado, Ranger, Dakota, Frontier, and Tacoma). On paper, it seems the 2011 Tacoma 2.7 I4 has the best combination of stats in the categories that are most important to me: fuel economy, tow capacity, reliability, and of course price.

My first question for y'all is about the Tacoma 4WD system. I couldn't find a detailed description of it on the Toyota website. It says only that it is a "demand part time 4WD system with 2 speed electronically controlled transfer case". Can anyone elaborate on how it works? I'm used to the Jeep's computer controlled, fully automatic, full time all wheel drive system that you completely ignore for 99.9% of the time until you need "low range" (or pull up to the gas pump and realize what that system is costing you!).

    Thanks.

The truck has part time 4x4. In high traction situations you have to be in 4x2 or the drive line will bind up which in extreme cases can cause breakage. In low traction situations switch to 4x4 high or low depending on what you need.

Got it. You have to think for it. But that's good. One of my older Jeeps had a "manual" system like that. Thanks!
