Can you imagine the outrage on TW if they released a Tacoma in the states that had a 0 to 60 time over twelve seconds...

    Just the basics
No one has mentioned that the standard cab is still an option. If these were released it would take a nanosecond for everyone to be on the bandwagon. I seem to remember a lot of bitching about the 3rd gen design(and colors-quicksand) yet the tide has turned. I don't necessarily like the looks but if it is a better rig and can be a better mule all is well.

I like it ok. But the mpg rating is less impressive. A uk gallon is 10lbs of fluid water, us is 8.34 lbs of fluid water. So mpg would be down to 31 or 32. Not far of what could be done with a gas engine and a turbo.

Gas-turbo would have nowhere near the towing and payload to get those numbers. It would just be a high mpg wet blanket. 32 mpgs is ~50% better mileage than 3rd gen.

Also, based on the toyota-aus website

    http://www3.toyota.com.au/hilux/specifications/sr-4x4-extra-cab-pick-up-28l-turbo-diesel-manual

you would get 35hwy/25.5 city/ and 31 combined in US mpg (converted from km/L) for an equivalent to an acess cab 4x4 manual trans (38 hwy for the 4x2). That knocks the socks off the Taco equivalent.

And this is why it wouldn't sell well in the U.S. no matter how much people say they want diesel. That said, I would have happily imported one if I could. The TPP was supposed to change that, but nobody knows what ended up in that agreement.

Diesel puts out a lot of particulates and NOx. Gas does not. That's also the European spec. EPA rating would be a fair amount lower.

My 16 TRD Sport would be down the road in a minute if the Hilux came with a 6' box, and a diesel. Even a V6 gas engine would do it. Built in either Japan or Canada. I love my TRD but the Hilux is just another step higher in the food chain.

I wonder why no one imports old ones? you can get 4runners, delica's, defenders etc but never see a hilux pick up

I'm originally from the UK, I find it strange that in the UK not many people who need one buy one over a panel van yet we got so much choice, where as here in the land of the pickup all the cool stuff is unavailable

As far as NOX, years ago our governments went after co2 emissions due to global warming and pushed everyone into diesels, now lots of the big cities are talking of banning diesel, most people now have realized you need to do a fair bit of mileage to make diesel worth it due to the extra costs, Im a diesel mechanic and tbh the technology is getting pretty crazy, I wouldn't buy a modern diesel as my personal vehicle due to the complexity of it, an old one hell yeah

Who cares about a 13+ second 0-60 in a truck when it can do this.

The Hilux 6th(1997) gen and Tacoma looked related. But a few Face lifts into the 6th gen they started to slope the hood down and round out. I like it, but I think when Americans view it for the 1st time, they think "It's not Truck enough". Honestly though, I think a bunch of you might relate to D4 lust. It's my personal opinion if the Tacoma came with a D4 option it would fly of the lots.

So if Toyota is paying attention to the Mid Size Duramax sale. All I know locally is every time I try to go drive one. There's none on the lot because they sell them as fast as they get them. Just FYI this info is for the GMC Canyon.

Does anyone know if in a right hand drive manual do you Gas with your left foot and clutch with your right? I've always wondered this.

Perfect. So all I would have to learn is to shift left handed.
