But...it has a fully boxed frame, 2000 lbs. payload, a diesel engine option, and a manual t-case.

We get bigger grills...and further pussification of what once was great sparten no bullshit little truck.

When Toyota built the first Tacoma, straying away from the HiLux chassis, it has been downhill ever since. It has been how many years and the frames are still rusting?

Pre tacos (toyota pickups) and the older 4runner's still have terrible rust issues.

You can say thats better looking but the Hilux front end looks like it belongs on a car.A truck needs to look like a truck. At first the new Tundra looked a little odd to me but now I think its a great looking truck.I saw the new Tacoma and the first thing I thought is I want one.

I am originally from the rust belt PA, know all too well. ;)

I had both of those. Bodies yes...frames were solid though.

Maybe Toyota will never get a handle on the rust issues? :D

The Hilux does that by performance. The Tacoma does it by adding 10lbs of crap to the grill. I'll take the former, you can have the later.

Diesel just doesnt pay for itself unless you tow alot.Cost a chunk more and diesel fuel is more expensive.

Damn, even Ruskies get a real truck.... (I think that's a Russian Federation flag on Black Hilux if I am no mistaken. )
What people do demand in America ? Apparently bigger plastic grills and more cup holders ...
Bring real truck Toyota of GTFO.. !!

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
Old yota's 1979-88 had body rust issues because of the way they were designed. For the world market its not a big deal in the US is was bad.

89-up Yota's body was no worse than any other car or truck on the road.

Fully boxed frame, stronger but is more prone to rust because it is fully boxed. The real issue came when Toyota started producing frames in the US. That day in 1995 we got the now standardized sub standard corrosion prevention treatment..

I have old Toyota's with better frames than new Tacoma's. If you kept the mud out of the frame, and washed the salt off they last forever.

    Absolutely.

Unfortunately, Most Americans would hate the Hilux. It is not nearly as "refined"

I would love one. And I think the front looks better then 3rd gen Tacoma. 2nd gen Tacoma wins on looks.

I think old J Clarkson needs to do the same series of tests with modern trucks.

If you're not already, DVR the new season of Top Gear on BBC America. A teaser they showed on the first episode has them out in the woods in American FS trucks.

There's also going to be a showdown between American Top Gear and British Top Gear. That should be a pay-per-view event.

Haha. No competition American top gear is nowhere near the level of BBC.. Sad to say, but they hosts on BBC are the best. And American top gear just does the same thing over that BBC has done before..

Unfortunately I can't DVR while I am in Afghanistan.. But I will be watching them when I can.

Not sure about that, A lot of people drove 1gen and were happy, a lot of people are driving 2gen and are happy too.
I think if Toyota brought Hilux to US they would outsell 2gen trucks easily.

1 gen was pretty close to the similar gen hilux.

2nd gen is not, its a different animal.

I doubt it. Americans were complaining, people on here are complaining about the gen 2 Tacoma
    -old
    -rough ride
    -"anemic" power
    -low tech
    -cheap plastic interior
    -handles like a truck
-not enough gears, mpg too low
    -too small
    -can't tow enough

    Same generation of hilux
    -rides rougher
    -cheaper interior look and feel
    -less interior room
    -less options
-handles even more like a truck
    -lower tow rating
-higher payload (part of rougher ride)
-no more efficient except the diesel, or the smaller gas engines in other markets. Neither of which would be the same in the US. Smaller engine is less power and slower, diesel would have more emissions and new diesel crap.
-manual 4wd on some, people don't even know how to drive a manual let alone figure out the super complex J shifter.. People are dumber than ever.
-looks. I personally love the hilux, but Americans like big and flashy..

Everywhere else there are tons of small trucks that are the workhorses of the world, then the medium trucks and large trucks. Nobody else has very many large trucks like our full size market. As a market we care less about the practicality or use and more about the look and feel.
