In my experience people CAN tell the difference if they've ever been able to discern the direction from which sounds come, any variance in frequency or volume. It's the product of the components you list, and subtracting each changes the output of the system. I've only worked on custom car stereos a few years, but the differences are obvious when someone sits you down and adds a component at a time.

Absolutely, without a doubt you can hear the difference.

I was, "poisoned," way back when, with the opportunity to sit in the sweet spot of a properly set up home stereo. Left and right (speakers) disappeared and I heard the stage open up. I was shocked at how the sound had changed.

Time alignment, and DSP will do a lot to try and recreate that. Still need to place driver's appropriately though.
