Installed a set of Spyder LED Tail Lights on om 2001, TRD, Extended Cab. Installed first one on Passenger side, everything checked out. Then installed Drivers side and again it all worked fine. Final check before putting screws back in for final install and passenger side tail light won't work, Turn Signal, Brake and Back up are good, just no taillight. Hooked OEM Tail light back up and no joy it doesn't work either. Took non working Spyder over to drivers side and hooked up, it worked perfectly, so it isn't the tail light. Then noticed that passenger side Tag light is also out of commission, Both tag lights appear to be on the same circuit at least they both run from the same conduit. I checked fuses and all okay. Basic problem is that passenger side tail light is okay, but won't light up, passenger side tag light also won't work.
The passenger side tail light worked until I hooked up the drivers side. I did all of this yesterday and got up this morning and went over everything again. Its above my pay grade for sure. If anyone has experienced this or has any idea's please let me know. I plan on taking it to the shop next Thursday. I know that it must be a ground but where? and what color?

    THIRD BRAKE LIGHT
For those 2001 thru 2004 Taco owners I did a lot of checking before attempting to switch mine over to an LED. Tacoma owners have done everything from removing nearly everything in the cab down to bare metal to get to the two thru bolts holding the light in to driving a wooden/plastic wedge in from the bottom of the light to force it out. After thinking it over I decided to cut the center of the light out using a multi-saw and a Leatherman saw blade, then cut completely around the flush bolt heads, (chip the solder away from the bolt heads using flat head screw driver and hammer). Then reaching in and turning the bolt with my fingers until enough of the round bolt head was exposed to unscrew it by hand, being sure to hold onto the bolt so it didn't fall down in to the cab. The bolts are very loose to start with. Then using Turtle Wax adhesive remover and a plastic paint scraper I removed all of the adhesive and old foam before installing the new Spyder LED Light. They furnish all necessary hardware and you do not need to rebolt the new light. My method is fast and efficient and takes about an hour, however it does result in total destruction of the OEM light. As soon as I figure out how to upload photos I'll post some. In the past month I've replaced all of the exterior lights except front turn signal, added NERF bars, and Bull, BAR and installed new seat cover. Looking Good.

Since these lights say they plug into your Factory Harness .

I would think your truck side plug is either corroded or the new light plugs are just a poor fit .

Broken wires in the truck harness is also a possibility .

Time to break out the Meter

    Wyoming09,

Thank you for your reply. I thought that since the right side tag light was also not working and that the OEM tail light wouldn't work after installing the Spyder light and putting the OEM light back on that it might be an indication of whether its a power or a ground problem? I've got a meter just a lack of experience using it. Whatever happens I will post the outcome. Mystery here is that the drivers side tag light and tail light work and the passenger side doesn't and both tag lights appear to be on the same wiring.

After extensive internet searching I found two other Tacoma owners with the exact same problem. Turned out to be a connection problem in the trailer light conversion box. A very slight reset of the trailer box wiring and all was well. Goggle is truly the font of all knowledge. The clues were all there. Only the right/passenger side tail light and tag light were affected. If a short was involved fuses would have blown and didn't and the fuse for the taillights affects both tail lights, both tag lights and the front running lights and in this case didn't. What really confused me was that the left side tag light was working and the right side wasn't. My conclusion is that the trailer conversion box was cutting power after it got through the drivers side tail light and tag light. My fears of a $100/$200 repair bill dissolved.
