New Lenovo came preloaded with Windows 8.1 and I f**king hate it. It is the worst OS ever conceived. Anyway, I have the OS on dvd and was wondering what drivers I need to get up and running.
Should I just install Win7 and see what happens?

Take note of what current hardware it has, sometimes a bare OS install will not have necessary drivers for all devices. Typically its only the video card, sound, and network devices you have to worry about. Go to lenovo's support site and download them to a USB drive. Also download the hot key utilities, wifi software, etc.

Look on lenovo's website and find your model #'s drivers. If the hardware on the laptop doesn't have windows 7 drivers you might be SOL.

If the Lenovo came with windows 8.1, winblows 7 will work just fine, MS updates will dial it all in, for anything that may be Lenovo specific (IE, fingerprint reader), you will have to get the one made specifically for your laptop....

It will be painless except for the updating, go for it...I have been tinkering with my HP, not to worry.....shiza I did, added mems for 8 gig, added SSD as boot drive, kept original boot drive and made it a slave (room for two HD's in the unit) and loaded a NON-HP version of Windows 7 (64 bit ultimate), all works, nary a problem...

Just reloaded the OS and really, it only took a few minutes, the updates kill ya though, takes so long....

Go for it and don't worry, it will work just fine....

searching by model number yields nothing on lenovo's site, but from searching "g510" it looks like all the drivers have a Win7 driver. how do i know which drivers i need? do i need to write down everything in the device manager? what specific info do i need?

just wipe the drive, reload the Windows 7, make sure you have an internet connection, all will be good....this is EZ stuff...don't worry about the device manager YET...you can inspect that after your win7 ship is tight...

I doubt seriously you will have to load much up, I had to add the card reader driver to mine, and the fingerprint drivers, otherwise, MS updates brought it all together...and no HP bloatware...

ok, i will give it a shot. there's no "special" stuff like fingerprint scanner or touch screen
the only thing i'm worried about is some of the lenovo/intel processor management stuff and some other things

you might try to download the following from each devices manuf website:

    - chipset driver (motherboard)
    - network driver (onboard Ethernet controller)
    - video driver (vid card, or for onboard vid)
    - audio driver (aud card or for onboard aud)
    - printer driver (if you use a manuf-supplied driver for it)
    - other peripherals (if you use the manuf-supplied drivers for them)...

for most stuff, windows will probably have the drivers, ...at the leaset, i'd recommend getting the latest chipset driver, network driver, and perhaps vid driver, ....install these in the order listed after clean windows install...

Yeah windows 8 came on my pc as well, seems like it's a great design for something with a touchscreen, not so much your average pc like I have.

...not sure I understand why folks don't like win 8.1.?.?.?

I moved to win 8.1 and like it... best of both worlds, ...it has the "desktop", and you can install and run programs like we've been used to... boots extremely fast...

its awful. its 2 different OS's that can't figure out what it wants to be. sometimes it boots a program from the regular OS, sometimes, it boots an "app" from the mobile OS. and when i press the windows key, i go to a stupid fucking app OS. i fucking hate it.

The tailored-for-touchscreen interface would be unusable on my desktop PC, but boot times etc. are faster than Win7. The Classic Shell restores the traditional interface (hell you can even choose to use the Win2000-style start menu).

all you need to do to go to the desktop is press <win> + D... and there's a half dozen other ways, ..and I think you can configure it to bring up the desktop after booting... on my start page, there's also a block that says "desktop", ..which goes right to it... I make my desktop background the same as the start page background, ..makes it transition seamlessly, ..I think it's pretty cool...

Lenovo has worked great for me. Had it for about a year and a half. Running windows 7. No problems at all.
