In late here and did not read 6 pages but 3rd gen as it sits is most likely not able to handle 442 lb ft of torque . I was told that when Dodge first was coming out with the 5.9 Turbo Cummins , they had to keep detuning it until it would not twist the frames to junk .
I really doubt Toyota designed the frame and driveline for anywhere near 60% more torque.

The tacoma needs a turbo. The van motor isn't even a proper van motor any more since the Sienna now has 296 HP and Tacoma is only at 278.

Haven't read all the posts here but I think the little 2.0L from the NX is more likely to be used in the Tacoma at some point.

Should make hybrid trucks... Uses electric motors for the instant torque low end below 30 mph then a 2.0L turbo for higher end driving. BOOM! (Drop the mic and walk away)

It has plenty of power at a higher power band. Personally I don't want to have to floor it when I hit a hill. I was very skeptical of this video till I read many threads on the new Tacomas ability.

I live in Colorado and drive I-70 west occasionally, pretty much everyone has the gas pegged up this road. Even my Explorer with no load needed to be floored to maintain speed. Theres sections of Hwy 36 that a 4 cylinder needs to go about 25 mph to maintain power. I had an old Blazer, you needed to hit the hill at 50 to make it up and when you go to the top you bogged to 20

Our 2.0tfsi in our audi spools at 1200 rpm or so. turbo lag is almost non existent, unless we are on a steep incline. Then there is a bit of a lag and then punches forward. I think it'd be great on road. But i'd hate to experience that while trying precise maneuvers off road on steep loose surface inclines.

The reason we all love these trucks and keep buying them is mainly because of their history over all of these years. Reliability, dependability, practicality and great resale value. These trucks have never had a turbo and they are tough as hell. Something tells me if they had a turbo they wouldn't be holding up over decades with no major engine failures. I see these trucks with 200k to 300k mies and still fetching good money because people are still buying them. As long as this truck stays somewhat on the low tech side of the spectrum they will last long and work hard for you years and years down the road with minimal repair bills. Everyone wants the hi-tech power and fuel efficiency these new turbo engines or even a hybrid electric give us but we all know that that the longevity of a turbo motor or E-motor will always be somewhat questionable after the warranty expires. My $.02

Toyota Trucks have had a Turbo in the past.

The variable valve timing in the 3.5 L 2GR is more complicated then a Turbo. Plus when most people think that a turbo will fail they are thinking about cheap oil cooled turbos and not the newer oil and water cooled turbos manufacturers are using now.

The Tundra has Shitty gas mileage. It desperately needs a update. A motor similar to the ecoboost would be a good move by Toyota. The 3.5 litre would be a good motor for turbocharging. The headers are attached to the block and are water cooled. Which would help with the heat created by the turbos. The extra torque should help the motor stay in the Atkinson mode. Toyota is also starting to get on the turbocharged trend.
Toyota needs to step up with the Tundra.
I would like to see a turbo in a Tacoma but I am expecting it in the Tundra.

You know how unreliable jet turbine engines are? Won't last a quarter of the time that your combustion engines do probably even less then that. Bearings don't last forever in an turbine and I could only imagine the cost to repair them. Sheesh.

Recommended check/change interval on a oil bushing turbo is 100,000 miles. Cost for the turbo alone for a Subaru is about ~$1,000. Ball Bearing Turbos fair better, but will still need to be inspected/changed at a certain interval. Turbos are turbines, they spin at thousands of RPMs, and need much more frequent oil changes with higher quality oil.
