What's the best way to get the new maps to the stock head unit without paying the $100 dealership fee?

Replace the stock headunit with an aftermarket headunit that includes “free” updates.

    Subscription Questions

Do I have to pay for map updates?
For Toyota vehicles with Garmin navigation, a user gets 1 year of map updates at no cost.

How much longer will I receive free map updates for?
Garmin Express will display how much time you have left in your subscription.

Im not sure if any Taco has "Garmin navigation"

The best info that I have seen is to eject your current card and note the version. Then, check what the latest version is at the dealer, or online. And, proceed to eBay or wherever and buy one version older than current from folks selling theirs to recoup some $$.

The navi data is locked to the SD card serial number, so you can't easily make copies.

It ain't worth the effort since is works so much worse than my phone. Folks just need a good offline navi app as a backup.

Yup. Waze rocks when cell data is around, although it has messed up some nav destinations lately. I'm not sure why its search is not straight from Google. It sent us in the wrong directions a few times now and missed some exits. No big deal. G-maps is a backup. I am confused why both are not fully integrated feature-wise.

Out of coverage though, I have CoPilot GPS since lifetime updates were cheap and have been getting used to Gaia. No subscription there yet.
