I've been wanting to join a Tacoma community ever since I bought mine last year. I have a 2009 Tacoma double cab that's all stock. I had a 1990 Toyota truck in high school and have had the wheelin bug ever since. Last year I finally couldn't take it anymore so I got my silver 4 door tacoma. I'm in Raleigh, NC, so anyone around here I'm looking for places to go. I grew up in Utah and loved the 4 wheeling out there. NC is a different animal and I'm still learning about what is here (been here for 4 years, but only 1 since I bought the Tacoma). I've been a few places with some friends, but I'd be up for anyone who wants to show me some great places to go. I'm looking forward to modifying my truck. Any ideas on what I should start with? I was thinking bigger tires (38" too big?) with a 2" lift , a front bumper with a winch, and then I can go from there. I'm loving my truck so far though. Let me know what you think!

Anything larger than 32" tires requires a lift. Anything larger than 33" requires cutting metal. Anything larger than 35" is theoretically detrimental to suspension travel without a solid axle swap.

Most mid or long-travel configurations involve a 3" lift and 33 to 35" tires. I wouldn't go near anything bigger unless you SAC the truck.

As for front bumpers and winches, there are many brands available.

    Welcome to TW

3" lift with 32"-33" is a great, functional application. Anything bigger and you are going to run into other obstacles:

    Re-grearing
    MPG
    CG (center of gravity)
    Excessive wear (Brakes, Trans.)
    CV issues
    Front Diff issues

If you pass the 3" lift height, you will be treading into a widely disputed area between functionality and looks.

Thanks for all the good advice. At this point I'm using my truck as my commuter as well, so I probably won't pass the 33" tire size. Anyone recommend specific lift kits that are easy to install? I've been looking at everyone's rigs in the community and there are some great rides. Looks like I'm in the right place!

    Welcome from Fuquay Varina!

As for places to go, you'll want to search on Uwharrie. Awesome place!
If not there, the Outer Banks are always good, too.

Also, swing by the NC/SC thread to meet more Tacoma owners around here. It's summer, so chances are some of them are heading to OBX or Uwharrie very soon.
