What kind of adventure are you building for?

You guys out west have more options, from crawling to high speed desert stuff, and everything in-between. Based on your desired type of trip you can build form there.

It's also really helpful to have a build budget in mind, both a total to spend and when you can spend it, so you can prioritize upgrades.

    Welcome and good luck.

Dreams / goals would be to do the Mojave Road one day. Anything I've been on in the past are mostly forest roads, haven't done much in the desert. It's my daily driver and has to accommodate a family of 4, so I cant get to crazy.

OME shocks, Dakar rear leaf pack, and some armor. Maybe bumpers if you want to go crazy.

You can spend as much as you want, but to have a really capable truck you don't have to.

Thanks Articelf. Do you have recommendations on the OME shocks? I have never done aftermarket suspension so I don't know how the ride would be any different than the stock setup.

The OME nitro charger kit is comparable to stock, it's going to soak up big bumps a little better, and feel different on road. It's not a huge change, but it's a great way to get a solid lift on the truck, and it will ride way better than a spacer lift on your stock suspension. Their Dakar leaf pack is meant to haul a 300ish pound load, so empty it rides like an old F250. You can pull leafs out to adjust the spring pack to your needs.

The next step is Fox/Icon/King, where you'll spend as much on front coil overs as you would on the whole OME kit.

Check out the beginning of this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/mtbs-2-0.410188/ for a good run down of options, and some well informed commentary on how it all works. Just remember you don't have to go as crazy as some of us have to get a very capable truck.

Thank you for this. I think the like helped quite a bit explain the difference between Icon and King/Fox. Based on this, since I don't do much fast off road driving, going with something like the King or Fox (Toytec?) would be more appropriate. However, would this translate into more body roll around town? Ill keep reading the link.

Toytek I think is more a competitor for OME. King or Fox are both great, on and off road.

If you look at my build you'll see some videos of Icon vs Fox running high (50mph) and low (2 mph) sections.

You'll have body roll if you take off the sway bar. You'll also get better performance out of your IFS, so there is a real tradeoff there. Truthfully it's probably better to keep it on, unless you are either a)going fast over bumps or b) crawling. Alot of us take it off, and adapt our driving style to deal with it.
