Hello all, I have been lurking for quite a while and I love this site. I'd like to get opinions on the following...
I am going to buy a Tacoma in the next 6 months. My criteria for the truck is V6, 4x4, AT, Access Cab. My intention is to drive this truck for 6-8 years at about 11,000 miles per year. I'm approaching this purchase decision in the following manner...
    $10,000 for a used one
    $20,000 for a used one
    $30,000 for a new one
I'm not concerned with purchase price. My goal is for this truck to "finish out" as inexpensively as possible. I work on houses, not trucks. All maintenance and repair work will be hired out to my local mechanic.
I've been researching the hell out of this, and the signs point towards the new one being the cheapest. That's hard to wrap my 40 year old mind around, but I'm well aware that the Tacoma is a different animal. I'm looking forward to watching you guys argue about this :) FWIW, I'm a fan of the new '16. The truck will be used as a daily driver and home improvement work. It will never do serious off roading and will haul/tow heavy loads a couple times per year. Any opinions will be appreciated.

The question is which one would you project to cost the least.

You can get a V6 Access cab as an SR5, TRD sport or TRD Off road. SR5 would be cheapest. You'll have to wait until retail prices are available for your region, which should be soon. It ought to be about 30k for the SR5 and more like 33k for the TRD-OR, and the sport a bit less than the OR.

I think $10k is less than $30k, but the $20k has me confused a bit.

Forget purchase price, I'm only looking at final cost. Tubesock, I appreciate your response. I'm prolly looking at an SR5. Purchase prices in OP are give or take a couple grand.

Buy a new SR if you don't care what it looks like or buy an SR5 or TRD Sport if you want it to look a little nicer (SR5 is obviously cheaper). Whichever you choose you can drive it for 10 years worry free. You'll still put $10-12k back in your pocket when you sell it in 10 years.

TRDPro4x4, do you think that's cheaper than a used one for 20 grand? It would prolly have 80-90,000 miles on it when I bought it, but the depreciation plus repairs may yield a lower final cost.

2016_dbag, that's your third response to my OP in about an hour. You seem to be having a hard time understanding a rather simple thread. What, specifically, can I clear up for you?

Without fuel numbers being released yet, I'm assuming a 20% gain in real world mpg with the V6, which will make up any difference in cost you would see by buying an older model over the course of 10 years (everything else aside). Any savings you may be thinking about between the models is so small that it's really not even worth thinking about. The Tacoma has the best resale value of any other car/truck period.

I think the best value would be to buy a new or almost new 2015-2014..... Resale on these trucks are crazy so you could save 5000-8000 dollars but have 50,000 miles and a rusty frame..... I touch up my frame and it looks much better than any used one I've seen... and the new frame paint is better than the old ones....
Or lease a new one to have a low payment and buy it out at the end, make your own used truck.... that's what I did.... Your stretching out the payments but interests is low on trucks....

But if you run across a used one at a great deal, that would work..... Or wait for the trade ins on the new 16......

AlexB, I appreciate your response, but used Tacoma's are just as available as most other vehicles. They just cost more :) I was hoping this thread would lead to a discussion on buying new and incurring virtually no repair costs versus buying used and incurring whatever costs are necessary to attain what I stated in OP. Obviously, depreciation rates are a key factor as well.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'd like to hear what you all think about what the maintenance/repair costs would be for a Tacoma purchased with 80,000 miles and driven to about 160,000 miles?

shr133, I'm not worried about the frame issue. That was a grossly overstated issue to begin with.

I was in your shoes long ago. I planned on getting a used one, but prices were not what I expected every where I looked. I ended up with 7k mile Tacoma for $28k if I remember correctly. Tacoma holds its value so well, just buy new or newly used.

Doomsday, it's looking more and more like you are right. Thanks for the response. It makes me wonder what the hell Toyota is doing with this truck that is so different than what the rest of them are doing. I mean, I'm prolly showing my age here, but shouldn't used be cheaper? I feel like this truck's market is a bubble, and we all know how those turn out! At the same time, this bubble hasn't burst in 20+ years, so I guess the smart thing to do is hop on board and hope those GM's don't pop it.

    GM won't pop Toyotas bubble.
Would you like the Tacoma to have a lower resale value?
Do you like the 3rd generations trucks? Would you like the better fuel economy and added features? If the answer is no. Buy a 2015 or a used 2nd generation.

My advice to you is that you get another football team to cheer for.

And I'm saying that as a fellow Browns fan.
