    Hello all,
My name is Robb I live in Virginia and I have had my 06 for 9 years and it's bone stock with the off-road package. Now to the am I crazy question. My 06 has 177,000 miles on it I have done all the Maintenance on it and it has just been the best truck and I want to now turn it into a capable off-road rig. I'm no stranger to off-roading I have a purpose-built XJ and wheeled it pretty hard. I would like to give my dad the XJ and build my Tacoma so we can go do trips together and he gets a chance to drive lol not to mention 2 rigs we could go whenever we wanted always having a recovery rig. Would you all spend the money to equip a 14-year-old truck with 177k on the odometer?

welcome from SE VA! funny...i have a XJ i've set up for off roading also (a 1998 complete w/ Chrysler factory rust package...lol)....i recently bought a 2020 trd or and starting building it out as daily & mild off road/trail rig.......I'd say go for it!!! as long as the frame is solid and you don't mind working on a 14 year old truck. I think your plans are great, making wonderful memories!!! Not sure what the other options are? buy a new truck and build it out? truth is, you'd probably spend as much $ for new 2006 build parts as you probably would for 2020 parts. (lift/tires/rockers/bumper, ect). I will say, this is the first time i have bought a new truck and started building on it from scratch - soooo much easier to work on. Hope that all makes sense..... either way man, Enjoy the journey! Keep us posted.

Edit: P.S. you've done the maintenance, i wouldn't be worried about 177K miles on these trucks, a few 100k miles to go!

Welcome to TW, I wouldn’t hesitate to build your truck. Your money will buy more with a paid off truck.

Stock 4x4 Tacos are pretty capable.
I live on the Va.coast and have yet to get stuck. Unless competitive rock climbing is in your future I say enjoy the ride as is.

Welcome from Virginia Beach! Tacomas are long-lasting and supremely capable trucks. You shouldn’t feel crazy spending a little hard-earned cash outfitting it the way you want.
