New member with transmission troubles

Hello,

I just joined and this is my first post. I recently bought a 98 Tacoma with a 3RZ and a 5 speed manual. It is a 4x4 with 150k miles on the odometer. When I first bought it the exhaust was in bad shape and it was very loud. It wasn't until I replaced the exhaust that I could here the rattling noises coming from the transmission. I suspect this is due to a bad input shaft bearing. I would welcome any advice or hearing about similar experiences. I am not too keen about forking out $1500 for a new tranny if I don't have to, but I have never had one of these apart, and don't want to start something i can't finish. I think I have a fairly good mechanical aptitude, but I also know when something is beyond me.
