2TR-FE engine in Tacoma. I have a 2019 Tacoma with 2.7 engine. I had a 1998 Toyota Tacoma prerunner with 3RZ-FE 2.7 engine that I kept until it had 280,000 miles before I sold it. I replaced nothing on my 3RZ-FE engine except A/C belt at approx. 178,000 miles it was squeaking a little when the A/C would cycle on. Everything else I did to truck was maintenance. Oil changes were done every 5000 to 6000 miles with either Castrol 5W-30 or Shell T-6 engine oil 5W-30. I started using the Shell oil at 140,000 miles because it had more zinc than Castrol oil. 3RZ engine uses shims so I knew more zinc would be better for less wear on them. Transmission was the 4 speed automatic. Fluid was changed every 50,000 miles or sooner if I noticed a change in red color. I used Castrol import approved fluid at every change. Rear diff fluid was changed at same time as transmission fluid just to make it easy to keep up with. When I sold the truck to friend at work with 280,000 miles everything was working on truck engine used NO oil and truck did not leak any fluids. Ran just as good as the day I got it. Compression test was done on engine at 280,000 miles and all cylinders had 180 to 185 psi compression. Now from my understanding from Toyota mechanic the 2TR-FE is the new 3RZ-FE engine. Block is the same. Toyota upgraded head on 2TR-FE , Dual VV-ti , roller rockers, hydraulic lifters, head has special oil squirters on top of cams. All these things should if made correctly make the engine better less maintenance I should say even though my 3RZ-FE never gave me any issues with valve adjustment. It was checked at 200,000 miles and was still in specs. , so no shims were replaced. Now for changes that my not be so good that Toyota did to 2TR-FE , plastic intake, valve cover, air pump to recirculate gases back through the engine. I think it only uses this when cold but not sure. Now only time will tell if the 2TR engine will be as good or maybe better than the 3RZ engine. So far it is doing just fine. My new Tacoma was in the fuel pump recall but so were many other Toyota and even Honda vehicles. Now for the transmissions they could be brothers from my point of view. The older Tacoma would shift out of over drive on the smallest of hills loaded or not didn’t matter one bit. The new 6 speed acts the same way. Only difference is the new 6 speed likes to see how fast it can get you into top gear to save on gasoline. Many complaints about this from owners. Plus if you put it in power mode it will down shift even easier although it does seem to hold the gears longer. The older Tacoma transmission never gave me any issues shifted in and out of over drive the entire time I owned it, pulled what ever I asked it to with no issues but a lot of shifting. New 6 speed does better with a load and holding the gears up and down hills. Also shifts fast but does it smoothly unlike the older transmission that was quick and harder. Now all this being said do I love my truck YES. No vehicle I have ever owned is perfect. I think Toyota tries to get it as close as they can and still try to satisfy the new laws on saving fuel and oil that the government is pressuring automakers. That is another thing I don’t really agree with. Changing the oil at 10,000 miles is a long time. If you do choose to do this which I changed my first oil change at 4,000 when truck was new then dealer changed at 10,000. It came with first two oil changes free of charge. Look at your oil from time to time if it looks really dark brown or black change it sooner. If you are going to use the 10,000 mile oil change that Toyota recommends use the best synthetic oil you can find. Oil is going to be important on the 2TR-FE because Toyota went through the trouble of putting the oiler system on top of the cams so keep your oil clean so this system doesn’t gum up. I think that is the one thing that could destroy the 2TR-FE engine. Well my two cents right. We love or trucks and want them to last so that is why this form was started.

Welcome to TW. The 2.7 engine is indeed a gem. My 2nd gen never had a hiccup in 11 years.

What does everyone think about Scan Gauge 2 for transmission temperatures? Has anyone compared it to Tech stream. Both get information from ECU right? Should be pretty accurate since ECU gets it directly from transmission sensor. ( For the 6 speed automatic that Toyota forgot to include a transmission dipstick) Ha! Ha!
