Howdy neighbors. Heading over to Taos next month for a few days R&R. Any recommendations or scenic road ideas? Nothing extreme - I'll be traveling with my wife and granddaughter. What's the snowfall usually like in mid Feb? Anything to worry about? Thanks!

How will you be coming to New Mexico ? Highway 518 from Las Vegas NM to Taos is a good drive and usually kept clear.
There is not a normal snow fall from year to year here recently.

Yes, I believe that's how i have it mapped out. Taking 84N off I-40 and it leads to I-25. I'd then get on Highway 518 around Las Vegas and stay on it all the way to Taos. Thanks!

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
I'd use that route only if there was NO snow forecast for the time your driving. If any weather at all just get Taos from Santa Fe. The road will be much more traveled, and should be kept up better. All the roads to Taos are hairy if it's snowing, but I'd wouldn't want to be on the road from Vegas to Taos in the snow. Unless your super experienced with snow travel and have a set of chains and all the other things necessary to get yourself through a mountain pass in the snow.
A couple years ago a family was headed to Taos from Texas and they took another back road, got stuck in a snow drift and buried under the snow for a couple days. They survived, but they were dumb to take a back road in a blizzard to try and save a hour or two.

Good info and advice, I'll be sure and check road conditions before attempting it. Thanks Nickel.

Thank you thank you thank you! Were at the airport waiting to head home. Had a great few days here. Didn't get to hike. Did visit the aquarium and gardens. Took the tram to Sandia Peak this morning. Really enjoyed it!!

Had Marble on a previous visit and made sure to hit it again this week. Hit Tractor/Nob Hill today. Good call!

To use Tractors wifi, I had to give up my email addy. I have two emails for $1 off my next pint... PM me so that I may forward them to you for your referral.

Holy shit this makes me so sad... I park at UNM every day: I'm soooo worried about my truck .. especially now that I just dumped a lot of money into it... my old 05 never got vandalized or broken into... I had a super sensitive alarm on it though... I'm wondering if you're right that it just had to do with the trail parking where no one is around... they don't sell fancier aftermarket doorhandle shit?

I haven't seen anything to make the door handles more difficult to break into. I JB welded the lock cylinder in when i replaced the handle, hopefully that helps some. I ordered an alarm for it that i'm going to install here soon as well. I also had a local shop/old friend tint my windows darker too last week. Hopefully these things will help deter another theft. Overall, I'm happy that my entire truck wasn't stolen at least. Just so disappointing that this is so prevalent in our society these days.

Well that's disconcerting. We visited Santa Fe, Taos, and Los Alamos last year and really enjoyed it. We liked it so much we were looking at maybe even moving to NM. Albuquerque looks to have more industry/engineering jobs.

I love NM, beautiful and great things to do. Most my friends and family are engineers and have great jobs in Albuquerque. As long as you be vigilant and detour criminals you have a better chance of not getting hit. Also not living in certain neighborhoods or areas where theft is a major problem.

    ...

Damn that sucks! Two years ago I was riding pine flats and they stabbed a hole in my gas tank and drained all my gas!

Just as a note, I've herd reports of people getting broken into a lot this winter at top of Spain too. Last year I said screw it and purchased the $25 annual parking pass at the Elena Gallegos area.

I may have to look into doing that. Does that pass only allow people with it into that parking area?
