Do we want to set a tentative date for a cloudcroft/ruidoso/Alamogordo excursion?

What's the best season down there? Is summer ball's tripping over hot?

Fairly hot in the summer, about what you'd expect for the desert. Spring and fall are pretty decent, but there's been plenty of days in the summer that were just as nice. That said, if we all want to go to Ruidoso/Cloudcroft, the weather is much different. I don't frequent those places enough to know when the good weather is, but suffice to say, it's always colder up there than it is down here.

Remember Cloudcroft is 9000 feet in elevation so during the summer it’s one of the coolest spots to be. Ruidoso is sitting just over 6000 feet. Alamogordo is over 4000 feet.

And if you got White Sands and stand on top of a dune, it's 4030 feet. Also tends to be cooler there regardless.

Not during the day in the summer. At night it’s cooler.

You right. I've only been twice but both times it was much cooler than out in town.

Agree, I have spend a lot of time in Alamogordo, ex from there.
I did the hike there and started around 9am and at 10am it was hot, really hot.
Alamogordo is hot during the summer and White Sands is hotter in the day time.

There is a trail that goes from High Rolls up to the south side of Cloudcroft, part of the NMBDR, could be a nice trip, I haven't done that part, my trailer broke and I had to stick to pavement to get it back to ABQ. Its the end part of part 1. https://ridebdr.com/nmbdr/

I will look at the link when I get home tonight but I think you are talking about La Luz Canyon. It’s not a very long run and it will either come out on Hwy 82 or Hwy 244.

I’ve spent some time in cloudcroft in March and weather is nice a little chilly but not bad at all. Same with ruidoso in September weather is great but can also be a little chilly.

I’m curious about that section you were on. In November a group of us went on the section from Socorro to reserve. Super beautiful drive but not challenging in the slightest other than some of the snow we encountered.

The end part of number 1 is the La Luz canyon. It is just a forest service road. Its a nice drive. Nothing serious. You can pick it up in the Burro Flats area also.

I am guessing that you are talking about the Gila. Most of the NMBDR is easy, The parts that I have done where easy except for a fallen tree across the road, snow and mud ruts and the tire spike a friend picked up going through a mud puddle. it is more about just getting off the pavement and enjoying the scenery than it is about challenging you & your vehicle. I will be spending a week this summer down in the Gila just kicking back, fishing and hiking, eating some good food, having a few drinks and smoking a few cigars.

Alright fellas just putting the word out about the next meet so hopefully we can get a few more members out. Figured we could meet a little closer to freeway access with plenty of parking so lets get some consensus on one of the two places.

    Date: Thursday, March 5th
    Time: 5:30pm
Where: Rio Bravo Brewery - 1912 2nd St NW, Albuquerque, NM 87102
OR Canteen Brewhouse - 2381 Aztec Rd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87107

Are you having eye problems? As in, you can't see yourself going to Canteen?

    I crack myself up.

Had a fun day with @Darth ToyTaco and @Taco505 yesterday at the pureco even with my derpage at the end. Even if you do something really dumb like forget to tighten your wheel spacer, @Darth ToyTaco is willing to help you get out no matter the shit conditions .

It was a lot of fun. We definitely have some more exploring to do out there so we should set up a run. Nothing like working on a truck in the rain under power lines  20200222_094623.jpg 20200222_092055.jpg
