Hello, I just moved to NM and bought my first taco. What are some great overlanding trails and camping spots around northern NM/Santa Fe? I understand if these are closely guarded secrets you don't want to give out. I'm also having electrical issues with my dual battery system, what are some good shops that can help me out?

Any forest service roads in the Santa Fe or Carson national forest. Determine what Ranger District you want to explore and search for the MVUM (motor vehicle use map). For example, google “Santa Fe National Forest Coyote Ranger District MVUM” that’d be a good start.

Welcome to the land of enchantment! The great thing about NM is that if there is a dirt road without any prohibited signage, you can most likely be able to take it for cruise. But, it sure helps to know who’s land you are on. New Mexican’s, BLM, State, and Tribes can be particular about driving on their land. BLM is likely a safe bet and luckily BLM has a lot of area in NM. I’m from NM and welcome to the state.

Thanks for all the great advice!
I let my truck sit for 3 weeks and now the batteries are toast. Do you have any advice for what batteries to replace them with or a local service shop that really knows their stuff?
I bought the truck off craigslist with a dual battery system already installed, I don't fully understand how everything works or is wire together.

    Honeycomb composite sleeper platform.
Batteries "Might" be recoverable, depending upon what they are.
Try hooking up a battery in parallel with a charger on the good battery for about an hour. The dead battery should come up in voltage. Then see if the dead battery will take a charge directly with the charger. While going through it you will want to become familiar with how the prior owner wired it.
Snap a photo of the dual set up as that would help us out.

    Welcome to New Mexico!

Not sure if you have been here before, but just Incase -

Clovis is very “West Texas” like ( high plains ), the mountains and desert indicative of New Mexico are west, north, and south of Clovis so your positive adventurous attitude is a good one. The desire to “get out and explore” this great state and the surrounding states (Colorado, Utah, etc) will yield amazing experiences and memories.

I am a “Military Transplant” I arrived in 1995 and through the years enjoyed it so much I married a local we raised four kids and stayed ( I grew up in San Diego Calif )

I love the small town low stress of Clovis and we travel to larger cities ( Albuquerque, Denver, Dallas, etc) if we feel we need the traffic, road rage, etc that comes with “Big City America” then return to the quiet slower pace.

I have traveled extensively through New Mexico and the surrounding states over the past 25 years, so much beauty and history to see and enjoy.

If you are looking for a great overlanding/ expedition minded organization/ group reach out to these great people here www.newmexico-expedition.com

Don't post much because I am not active on any forums. Recently have an issue with my 2015 TRD offroad. Steering wheel shake when braking at 40 mph.
New tires and recent alignment. Oh and 91,145 on the odo. Any ideas?

Needs a brake job, rotors and pads. Had the same issue a while ago after using cheap auto store brake parts. Went OEM and no issues since.

Little bit of this and that
If it's the Northern/Central part of the state then prepare for it to be like AZ on top of the Rim. If it's the southern part (Cruces, Alamogordo etc) it'll be closer to Tucson as far as climate goes. NM has a ton to offer for those that like to explore for sure and proximity to CO/UT makes it a good jump off point for exploring those states as well.

I’m currently in Phoenix and looking to move up to the Santa Fe area. We visited SF and Taos this last week of December to make sure the weather would be in our comfort zone and we were good with it. My girlfriend and I have both lived in snowy places before so we are ready for 4 seasons again. I’m born and raised out here in AZ and this place just isn’t what it used to be with all the people moving here. We wanted to move to Northern AZ someday but the prices are just way to high now and no one seems to be from around here anymore. We’ve been scouting places for the past year and NM seems to be the best place for us. We’re looking to live somewhere that has some land and is quieter. So far each visit to NM has made us fall in love with it more and more. I used to love AZ but just not the same anymore. It feels like my home has been exploited so I want to do my best to not make NM natives feel the same. NM is a beautiful place and I hope it is kept that way.
