Yep, I failed to mention ak's. They're relatively inexpensive and fun to shoot. They go bang every time too. I've never met a finicky one.

My suggestion: buy all 3. Bury them in the back yard.

I love the AK rifle. I think they are beautiful looking. Lately, I've been on a spree of building AR's, so now I'm smack in the middle of the AKvsAR deal.

Like Greg mentioned earlier: buy something targeted, (no pun intended), to your needs. Are you looking for home defense? Something to show off at the range with? A pistol to keep in your truck? Depending on your needs, you'll have a different platform, ammunition requirement, and so on and so forth. After you figure out what you need/want, then start picking stuff up and handling it. One of the more important things (as I think Greg said too, Jesus you talk a lot Greg), is how the feels to you. How does it fit in your hand? How are the ergonomics, etc. Then, fill out an app and spend some money.

Yeah, I talk too much but I learned these lessons the hard way with wasted time and money. Just trying to keep others from blowing money on shit they soon realize they don't even want/need.

Moral of the story, determine what you really want/need, talk to people, do some research, and make a reasonable decision.

Do I think 50 cal barrets are neat? Hell yes! Would I ever actually buy one? Hell no!

I'm a teacher. Do most of it from my phone. I had an hour break and now they're taking a test.

No special paper work or waiting periods needed. Any good gun shop would have or could get them. I can check prices here if you wish.

Now go research them. AK-47's are made world wide. Some are better (and more expensive) than others. I've heard russian and other eastern block made are some of the best and that chinese made aren't as good. I don't really know all the facts though.

Chinese aren't that good, unless you're getting a milled receiver. Century Arms, an importer of Romanian WASR-10, are a pretty good rifle. I've got one with about 15000 rounds through it -- about 2500 of which I haven't cleaned after. The trigger group is starting to get loose, and one of the rivets has come loose. For a 300 dollar gun, thats pretty damn good. You can get century's for about 400-500 bucks today. If ya wanna hit that 700 mark you spoke of, go for a Siaga, or an Arsenal. Those are close to top of the line. Egyptian guns are also of very high quality.

Check out the AR15.com forum, there is plenty of knowledge there.

Your welcome. I've never owned an ak but I have a valmet that's considered an improved, modern version of the ak. Its basically the same thing though. Its a 308.

Damn fun shooting if you can get over the image of dollar bills flying down range in rapid fire.

Ak's are probably one of the most fun to shoot! but the accuracy compared to the AR is just a little lower..IMO.. shooting ar .223 at 100 to 200 yards with iron sights is much easier for me than to shoot my ak 7.62x39 at only 100 yards. but you can't really beat the price of the AK since it shoots just about every ammo you put in it. Some if not most AR's will jam shooting steel, but none the less you never really wanna shoot steel in such a fine tuned weapon.

I've read mixed reviews on the Romanian's they seem to be a hit an miss on the QC..i've heard good things about the Bulgarians and Yugoslavians..They run a about 100 dollars more but worth it if you're looking for a decent AK. Romanians have a tendency to have the "magazine wobble".They are results from a magazine well that is cut to fit a 30rd clip when it was meant for the 10rd.

If you're going for a "work horse" just get the romanian..it'll go bang everytime you pull the trigger

hmm.. I'd mostly be looking for gas mileage improvement. Guess I'll stick to my plan of trading my truck in for a prius....

BTW -- anybody know of decently priced rentals up north? I'd prefer a house with a fenced yard, and at least a 1 car garage, lookin to be less than a thousand a month on the budget.... thanks!

Dom, go onto www.gunbroker.com they will have a huge amount of info on there. It is also kinda like an e-bay for anything and everything gun related.

I dig gunbroker. Just watch your shipping fees though. It'll seem like your getting a hot deal, but remember youve gotta pay shipping, (in most cases 25-45 bucks), and you'll have to find an FFL in town to do the transfer for you, (most gun shops will, from 25-60) bucks.

Johnathan, do you shoot regularly in Albq?

    Incorrect sir.

The shorty's are a bolt on kit as well but there is welding required because what you have to do is take your old header and the shorty to a shop so they can cut the cat off and weld it on to your shorty. After that they are bolt on and bolt off just like a long tube. The long tube header eliminates the cat entirely which is why you will get more performance out of the Long tube vs the Shorty. The install is quite simple and can be done in less than 2 hours for either application. Hope that helps.
