No it stabilizes your voltage. So the amp doesn't draw too much amps. Like a quick power burst for the amp.

That's the easiest way I can explain it.

Keeps it from over working your alternator and instead of every time your bass hits hard and your lights on your car dim it serves as reserved voltage for when it is needed... Doesn't stabilize anything. I used to do bass competitions... So car audio is my thing... I can't stand it anymore though... Some people say they work and others will say different... I say they are junk because when bass hits and you have quality speakers and high amp your capacitor is only good for one good bass hit after that it needs to recharge in order for the capacitor to work again properly other wise it is just a paperweight and another obstacle for your power to pass through. If your lights are dimming you aren't winning...

Yeah i had a lot of fun out there enough to justify the amount of time it is taking me to clean off all that mud

cool thanks for the explanation. i have a 12'' type R with a 1000watt amp and was thinking of buying one but it doesn't sound like i need one. Especially cuz i don't use my sub to rattle windows, I mostly use it to add some bass to my 6x9's which have just about the same amount of bass as my laptop :p

are you running crossovers to your 6x9s? Most "competition" door speakers come with them built in now. Since you are running 1000w amp and you say you don't use it to "rattle your windows" i'm guessing it's turned up like maybe half way. If your lights aren't dimming then you are fine. If they are then I would look into seeing if you can upgrade your alternator.

^^ I'm not too familiar with audio, so what do you mean by running crossovers? I was like 16 when i had the system installed and back then I didn't really work on my truck so I had audio express put in the system, which could have been a mistake cuz I definitely feel that my system could sound better if it was set up properly.

I use to do SPL comps also. I have the trophies and stats to prove it. I work in the CA realm also. Not turning this into a pissing contest but some companies now call their compacitors voltage stabilizers. They are suppose Give the amps a quick charge so your lights don't dim is stabilizing the voltage so your voltage does not drop. It keeps the cars volts around a healthy 14.4v. How is that not stabilizing anything? Do they work no not really that's why we don't sell them and I won't install them unless the cutomer really wants it. The capacitor has nothing to do with the quality of speakers or amps your running. It for adding help to your cars electrical system if it needs it. I used to run a Kicker ZX2500.1 with a birth sheet of over 2700 watts RMS. For reserve power I ran a Optima G31 yellow top in the trunk. Capacitors are crap.

Yup. The big capacitor stores energy, and supplies it to the amp when the amp pulls a lot of current, which it does each time it powers a bass note. Without it, the 12 volt supply would droop (lose voltage temporarily) at that moment, so the amp couldn't make its rated power. Power is volts (potential) X amps (current), and when the current draw is very high the voltage tends to drop, due to the limits of an automotive electrical system working at 12 volts.

For home stereo amplifiers, the large capacitors are in the power supply inside the amplifier, and it operates at 120 volts AC.

    I'm going on now, aren't I.

Hey everyone, just checking in as a fellow Albuquerque Tacoma driver. I don't have any serious mods or anything (replaced my burnt out cats with DTLTs and a URD y-pipe), but I still enjoy heading out to southern and Cedro peak to put her through her paces when I'm not on my dirt bike or quad. I look forward to getting out to a meet at some point and (hopefully) getting a decent suspension/lift on her in the next year or so!

My daughter & my grandson are coming for a visit, and I'll be picking them up at the airport, but my truck only holds 2 people.

I don't want to interfere with your work, though; I'm trying to figure out a good solution. She's going to be borrowing a car from a friend while she's here; I'm not sure how she's organised that yet. I could rent a car for that one day, too.

Wow! Either solution would work. I just need to get her & little Eli from the airport to her friend's house to pick up the car. Probably wouldn't take more than a couple hours.

I'll know more about her plans as the date gets nearer; I'll let you know. Thanks very much for your help, Raymond.
