If you live in cold climates I'd say you care less about your truck running cheapo dino oil than someone who does a once a year oil change with a full synthetic

I'd say it depends on what type of driving you do, a ton of highway mileage? Probably fine with a filter change at least every 5k.

Me, I drive 10 miles each way to work, lots of cold/hot cycles, lots of stop and go in traffic, I want the oil out of there every 5k.

Why not? If the oil and filters are designed for it?

I think its funny how superstitious people get when it comes to oil changes. Like if you don't spin around ten times counter clockwise with each quart of oil you put in the engine will explode.

A quality PURE synthetic oil will last 20-25k miles. There is nothing insane or outrageous about that.

People don't touch their transfluid the whole life of the vehicle but get OCD about their oil changes. That to me is insane.

Cars/parts/fluids etc have come light years in the last 50 years.

It's a matter of choice. I'll still go with the original Mobil 1, and dump it every 5000K.

I couldn't care less about who makes it for walmart. My concern isn't even that its a walmart brand.

In subzero temps your conventional oil can barely be considered a liquid anymore

now that I am older, I am pretty good about getting oil changes, extend them a little based on how busy I am and what trips we may have planned. But when I was younger I learned that you don't have to change oil as much as they say you should. Had a chevy Cavalier wagon, and I bet I went 50k plus, at least 2 years, without changing the oil. Everything else fell apart in the car though.

this reminded of my cousin who could care less about his Nissan Altima. That poor car probably got an oil change every 2 yrs or so. Let's just say it didn't last very long :burnrubber:

I think the filter is the first problem. Maybe with changing the filter halfway through (or more often), you could get away with that kind of mileage.

My oil looks very good at 5k. When I've gone 7-8k it starts looking pretty dirty. My guess is the filter becomes pretty useless somewhere between those numbers and that's why it starts looking dark.

Blackstone said my oil was performing well at 6k and 7-8k should be safe as far as viscosity, wear metals, etc. were concerned.

One can not compare trans fluid to engine oil. A trans is a sealed system with hardly any possibility of contaminates being put into the system. Engine oil has all sorts of nasty blowby that it picks up that eats the oil. You can feel free to change your oil every 20k... but id rather stick to manufacture recommendations and change my oil n filter every 5k.

There are two groups of people in this world: the bleeding edge gotta try the new stuff and the sit back and let others ferret out the good and the bad of new stuff.

I tend to be the latter, It'll take a few years to know if annual oil is a good idea or not. I would think with filter changes and pulling an analysis at 6 months might give a better idea of how a particular vehicle is working with the oil.

I no longer drive as much as I used to so I'll stick to regular Mobil 1 and change it twice a year or so.

The other benefit of twice a year/5k changes is it gets you under and around the parts of you're truck that many don't take time to look at and just see how everything is looking. Great opportunity to get down there and shake the CV axles for play, take a quick gander at your U joints, and so on...Just my $0.02.

The last car that I drove to work and back was a 2001 Saturn something or other. I drove it 50 miles/day for at least 3 years without doing a full oil change. I told people it had a super advanced self changing oil system. About once every 2-3 months I would add a quart of oil, as it would burn off the bad stuff

LOL my old chevy was like that... had a rear main seal leak as well as excessive oil consumption.... a quart every 1k miles... i literally just would put a quart in ever 1k and call it good... every 10k id change the filter.

Conventional "wisdom" begets some pretty closed minds. You end up with evidence that is anecdotal instead of factual.

I find it interesting that an oil company would put out a product that incentivizes less consumption, rather than more. It is like GE putting out a light-bulb that lasts 10 years; at least prior to LEDs becoming a thing.

It is being discussed over at BITOG if you want to hop in the conversation:

    https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/4341497/Mobil_1_Annual_Protection

If I had to guess, the stuff probably holds up just fine under normal conditions, but that may be a little naivety on my part. Their disclaimer for backing the product does give a little wiggle room, that's for sure. Given the questions and price, I'd be inclined to wait for some independent reporting on how it performs in the real world. YMMV

On another note, for some (myself included), doing your own oil change is a chance to get under the vehicle and give it a once over on some of the aspects that don't get inspected quite as frequently. If for nothing other than peace of mind, I'll stick to a little more periodic oil changes for the time being.

If you give the annual stuff a try, let us know how it works out for you.

For me I change my oil 7500K and that is about twice a year max. I like the good feeling I get knowing there is fresh clean oil in the engine. Not sure why people always want to extend and extend the intervals and constantly worry about if the oil in there is doing it's job. Change it for peace of mind and there are rebates out there from 12 bucks for 5 quarts to sometimes free! Mobil 1 can keep their 25K intervals... I like to change my underwear everyday.
