Just went thru this decision with my Father in Law- a different truck, he had a 98 since new, great shape but he blew the motor. We researched every option, but at the end of the day he could not let "his baby" go for what they wanted to give him to scrape it, and he felt the cost to rebuild and upgrade the current truck and what he would end up with was a lot better option then buying another simular used truck with high mileage, or going new and payments. He went to a great local shop and they talked him out of a rebuild in favor of rebuilding his motor- stating they would build a motor better then any rebuilt one available, and with better parts at about the same price. So far, the truck runs as good as new. Best option IMO if you have a great shop to work with.
I thought if I ever ran across a very clean older 4x4 Toyota truck, or Landcruiser I wanted to live with "forever", that needed a motor I would consider the diesel option for a long term truck. Its 15K, or so which is alot for the conversion, but parts are available thru dealers, and these 3L diesels run forever. 35-40 mpg or so, with tons of torque. To bad Toyota did not try to get the motor to comply to DOT specs, but I am sure the market would not be there.
Get a good shop, and rebuild your motor is the best option. Good luck
