So my engine is in its way out at 260k miles.

    I've got very low compression
    Cyl in order
    135,130,125,134.

The truck burns a ridiculous amount of oil. It's been 3k since my last change and I've already had to add 4 quarts.

I can't have the truck out of service for longer than a weekend to do an engine swap, otherwise I'd have it rebuilt.

My question is what year would be best to swap into my 07? I know that sometimes manufactures make small changes throughout the years. If I did get a newer motor, would there be any harness/ecu issues?

    Thanks in advance!

Just an idea. Rent truck for a week.(if it won’t be destroyed for work or any other reason) Approx cost $500. Tell your rebuild guy it needs to be finished in a week. It can be done. A good mechanic can do a swap in two days. Good luck with getting it fixed.

Newer 2011+ have the smog pump I believe so that might be a factor to avoid a newer one if you haven't done the research. Remember at 260k trans might also be worn a bit. Make sure your devoted to he vehicle and willing to put more in soon after the new engine.

Also that is not a ridiculous burning of oil. My buddies chrystler 300 burns 4 quarts in 200-300 miles. Amazingly it doesn't have any check engine lights. Cost of gas and oil is about the same.

If you plan on swapping in a junkyard engine or some import engine I would recommend you keep your original, rebuild it and swap it back in when finished. Buying a used engine can be hit and miss, sometimes you can get lucky with a decent one but unless you can see it running you won't know it's condition and you might end up going through the same issue again down the road.

I'm actually on a work trip using my vehicle. So I can call my travel department and get a rental while my truck is in the shop. I just need to find someone who is willing to do it. I do all my own work now, but engine rebuild is out of my wheelhouse. I'll ask my old mechanic if it's something he'd be interested in.

That's good to know about the smog pump. And I actually think I was wrong about the consumption. I think I'm on 9 quarts. Pretty sure Im on my second jug already. But yeah holy shit, that's a fuck ton.

And to answer your question, yes I'm devoted to the truck. I just bought it a year ago and I've put 50k on her so far. The trans seems to be fine. The truck got a frame replacement at 195k and they did the clutch and Everything thing else through the dealership. I plan on keeping her for at least the next 10 years.

If I had another running vehicle I'd totally v8 swap it. I need something with some balls to tow with.

And if I go the swap route, this was actually my plan. Throw the old block on a stand and go through it over time. Upgrade everything to Forged internals and get it ready for some forced induction!!!

Thank you all for your responses

    A little update

Got off the phone with the Toyota specialist in my area, and he couldn't give me a price on a rebuild.

But he let me know what a recent 4cyl motor swap he did recently and it was 4 grand.

Definitely just going to swap mine out and rebuild the old one when I can.

most always if U intend to swap

least amount o miles with the latest year usually works
U didnt mention if it is auto or manual

engine from same type also usually works

have a good look if U can

most salvage dont do a lot cosmetic so a good clean engine there again is a good start

now i know a low mileage clean engine cn be ragged out............possibly by some1 U know
    oddz are always there

9 quarts in 3000 miles... sounds like you'll have to replace the cats, the oxygen sensors and and air-fuel sensors, if equipped.
Good luck sir. Let us know how things end up with this.

Yeah I planned on that too. I get a p0420 code every so often.

I think I'm going to find a reman block. I need to find a reputable seller,as the two I've looked into (jasper,AAA engines) have pretty terrible customer service reviews.

After that I'll be making a list of the things I need/want to replace and slowly start purchasing them.

My mechanic wouldn't rebuild my engine, but I don't see why he would be opposed to replacing parts and swapping the engine for me while I'm out in california next year.

So far I was thinking to change
    Water pump
    Clutch
    Throw out bearing
I had some other things, but forgot them.

I'm open to suggestions! Especially on the clutch assembly. I've read different things about different clutches on the forums but can't remember what they were.

    Thanks!

    Hey man!

Nothing yet. My plan was to buy a reman and give it all to my mechanic next year while I'm off in california for work. Was thinking about buying a new or getting my trans rebuilt as well.

But I recently found another 07 that got in a wreck, but still runs and drives that I'm trying to check out Monday. 97xxx on the clock. Only thing is, it's an automatic. I don't see why it wouldn't just bolt up. My dad mentioned that the Crank might be different between the two models. As chrysler used to do that back in the day.

In the meantime, I dumped a whole bottle of engine restore in the oil and she's picked up some missing pep. My ass dyno says the trucks taking off faster and has less trouble up hills. Seems to not have the slight hesitation it used to switching from 2nd to 3rd.

I'm going to be doing a compression test tomorrow and see if it brought my numbers any. And it doesn't seem to be consuming nearly as much oil now. But that could be just from only driving 8 miles a day vs 100.

Anyway, here's a pic of my new added horsepower

Checked out the potential doner truck. It actually had 79xxx on it. Seemed to run fine, but the compression was 150,130,130,160. Didn't really look into it more than that. I offered the guy 500 bucks for the motor, and he declined.

He wanted 1100 for it, but it wasn't worth that to me. As it would essentially be a block for me to take apart and rebuild so I don't have to take my truck off the road.

Looking like a reman block is going to be the way to go at some point in the future

will you be making a kit for this to work easily? Lol. Also, would I be able to retain 4wd and a manual trans?

At that mileage I'd do it if it was me, then just straight swap that engine into your truck. You could then rebuild your original engine next year...plus I bet you could get money back selling other parts from the donor, I would be interested in a couple of pieces for instance..

He wanted 1600 for the whole truck. 1100 for the motor, cats were already cut off.

I just don't have the time or space to store another truck that I bought for just the motor.

I'm currently working out of state and when I head back home in 5 months, I'd need to find a way to bring it back with me.

In a perfect world I'd buy a rear ended 2500 and throw a 6.0 in my taco xD

My original plan was when my motor died, was to find a wrecked 4.0 taco and do the swap. My truck has a new frame and the body's mint. No truck payment, so why not? Aside from the people who say just sell it and buy the 4.0, those people don't have the knowledge to swap out something and make it run.

But the motor had a different plan and started crapping out earlier than expected. Roughly a quart of oil every 300 or so is far more than I'd like.

Makes sense, if you have the ability for sure.

And yeah, I had a Mustang in high school that ate/dropped in total a quart every 250. Not fun
