Looks like they are just slapping on some foam type tape haphazardly to me.

Unless I'm mistaken that's a totally different part than what I've seen so far.

This all is a headache for me. Glad I found this forum. Went to dealer to have a proper tranny fluid check, but they wont do it unless I claim an issue? Wtf?
Then they notified me about the sensor recall, so they sent me on the way and have to order the part. I'm nervous now to because I ordered an OEM pro grill to replace the chicken wire stock one.

I seen an article that this sensor is calibrated where it sits, and if I change the grill does that not mess with it as well?

Just seen my order form: says no codes shown, order sealant. does not seem like a fix to me

Can someone please confirm if they will replace the sensor with a brand new one on the sensor recall recently? Thank you so much!

And yes, they want me to put back the original grill for them to do the recall although I have an OEM TRD pro grill and garnish. SMH I have a TRD Sport 4x4 2018

I have same truck. Called two dealerships and asked them straight up. They are recalling due to the moisture getting it causing problems. The fix? Some stupid 3m foam sticky padding.
However, they will replace and warranty it if it throws any codes. Otherwise you get the tape treatment.

On the OEM issue. One dealership service manager said they dont care about the other grill, and the other one wasn't a manager but talked to the kid about it and said he had the Toyota memo next to him that has been posted around here before that grills on other trim levels can not be warranty worked on.

This is my first Toyota, and to be honest if the company does not want me to buy OEM parts from then to make the truck Mine which also helps the dealers. Then this will be my last. I mean how ridiculous is that? I understand non OEM parts or alignment on huge jacked up trucks but for literally a cosmetic item, they can blow it up there ass.

FYI: dealership who said they will still do the recall with other OEM parts was
Toyota of St Charles in Illinois

The one who said they will not do it is
    Toyota of Dekalb, IL

Dealer just called about the first oil change so I asked them about the recall. My truck is affected so I ask about being lifted and here is the answer I got.
We are legally required to fix it lifted or not!
Unfortunately it will cost me $25-35 for a car rental for the day

I went in for my 5k service last Saturday and they addressed the recall with no problem. I’ve had a few false brake alerts and wondered WTF. FWIW, I’m lifted about 2” and haven’t switched out my grill.

I have raptor lights and a avid off-road front bumper guard installed as in my profile pic. Would I need to remove those before i take it in?

Your lights should not be a problem, but the bumper guard might. Read that they would not do it if you had anything that blocked the sensor. Yours doesn't seem to block it, but save yourself the headache and take it off before you go. That's what I would do...

I don’t understand the dealership... if the truck is mine, I am entitled to do whatever I want to my truck.
Dealer: Yes, the truck “is yours” but we tell you what to do with ito_O. The TSS should be fixed regardless of what grille you have, the dealership can get into a big problem by denying the service. Hopefully no one gets into an accident due to faulty TSS, otherwise prepare for a lawsuit.

This is painful to read. Correct the vehicle is yours & the dealer/Toyota has every right to deny service be it maintenance or a recall if the vehicle does not fit a certain criteria like it has salvaged title or modified so as to no longer meet OEM specifications. The dealer would have a bigger problem if they applied said recall on a Sport with a Pro grille I bet. The location of the TSS is in a different spot on those models so I would think so is the software update that also goes with the recall that everyone seems to be forgetting about. The tech updates the software based off vehicle VIN. So he can not select a Sport with a Pro grille in the diagnostics tool that Toyota uses to update software. Get what I’m saying? I honestly am blown away by dealers applying the recall on modified trucks even if it is a simple grille change. So let’s say owner gets the recall completed on his Sport with Pro grille. One week later something fails in the TSS system & owner gets in a serious accident. That dealer is up shit creek without a paddle as Toyota has sent a memo out stating do not do the recall even if a simple grille change has been performed. That dealer has no chance winning in court.

I deal with these systems every week & even when they are calibrated perfect they sometimes have issues. Now change the location of the sensor & you can see why Toyota/dealers are denying people. These systems are no joke. The dealer I work at bought a new $175K vehicle back from owner as they said it suddenly applied the brakes for no reason a few times when raining. Could not duplicate concern but manufacturer wasn’t going to take the chance so got them a replacement vehicle. They are a pain to deal with, diagnose & very exspensive to repair. Honestly I am glad my truck does not have TSS.

I understand this 100 percent, but here is the thing I don't understand. If a dealership puts a lift on the vehicle or changes out the grille and sells it, the customer has no way to return that vehicle to stock because they do not get those parts normally. So say I purchase a Sport with a Pro grille brand new from the orginating dealership. Now I get a recall notice but I cant get the recall complete because I have a non stock grille that will not allow for the software update. Its not my fault, the vehicle was sold to me with that grille. How will that situation be handled?

I'm taking mine in next Friday for this, they acknowledged the faux grille, and will still perform the adjustment. Let's see how it goes.

Very good question. I honestly don’t know & it baffles my mind that Toyota dealers are modifying vehicles with TSS like lifts/ grilles. I guess the cash cow Tacoma is worth the risk to modify for them. The dealer that sold the vehicle needs to stand behind the modifications they performed but Toyota I bet won’t back that dealer in anyway if a problem occurs.

I would say if the dealer denies the safety recall on a vehicle that the dealership caused to be modified that you should get the denial in writing and place securely in a "Future Litigation" file along with your purchase agreement and any other documentation of the dealer mod.
