That's NOT a seal around the grill edge. It's protective tape - so as not to scratch the area when removing/replacing the grill. After work is completed they take it off.

Just got a call from my service adviser, said they are working on the fix for lifted trucks and watch for the letter.

Took my Yota in yesterday for 5,000 mile fluid check... I've got a 19' with Bilstein 6112s in the front, 5160s in the rear, AAL, a Pro grill and 265/75/R16s....

Yea, denied the TSS service... The master mechanic was sympathetic... said he'd just run the truck as a Pro do to the TTS update, but Toyota Corporate would allow it. The dealership emailed Toyota with a complaint saying they'd like to do the work...

Haven't had issues with my TSS sensor. Works fine... In the event of a fail.... all the impact would be is slow deceleration or a non-operational sensor... no big deal in my book... screw Toyota... it's my truck and I'm willing to pay to "own" it.

I just sent an email to Toyota USA. Will post if I ever get a response.

Email copied below if you want to send your own. (just change relevant bits lol)
    _____________
Hello, I am interested in purchasing a loaded new Tacoma Offroad but have come across some very worrying information in my research.

I have gone so far as to pay to rent a Tacoma from my local dealer for a day, then found a Tacoma to rent from AVIS for a long trip to make my decision.
I will immediately spend money on tires, upgraded suspension and the like to be able to take the Offroad edition Tacoma... Offroad.. once I purchase it new from a dealer.

I am hearing through my research that anything as simple as changing my tires will cause Toyota dealerships to refuse to perform a safety recall and will disable adaptive cruise and associated features.

If I wanted to pay $50,000 for a truck to take Offroad (without modern features), then I would buy a used Ford Raptor or similar. I am extremely disappointed in Toyota's handling of this specific recall and worry that this behavior will continue. Being 31 years old, and having bought 8 vehicles so far (3 brand new, 4th soon), this decision will probably affect my next 20 vehicle purchases, along with friends/family/coworkers who also enjoy being able to drive Offroad.

Please send this information to whoever it needs to go to and get this issue (and future policy) resolved and clarified. Below are 2 forum posts that specifically talk about this issue.

    Thank you for your time,

Wish I had the contact info for one of the uber passengers I picked up at the airport, he was a high level corp employee of Toyota USA, and close friends with CEO, as in dinners at the house and hanging with the family close.

he asked me a bunch of questions about how I like the Tacoma, and what I didn't like about it. and whatr I wanted to see in future models.

Would love to put a bug in his ear over this recall.

If only. If I happen to run in to anyone who is anyone in a BIG corporation like this, I'd would ask for a business card. Good practice

Okay makes sense. All I can see is the foam thingy on the top part of the sensor so I don't know why they would need to remove the grill. The work order mentioned reprogramming the Millimeter Wave Radar Sensor and I assume they did that via the OBD II plug. Drop off to pick up was less than an hour wait which included them pulling in, doing the work, reparking the truck in the customer pick up isle and then coming to find me wandering around the show room.

My understanding is there is a protective sticky "tape" that acts like a gasket that seals the sensor to some degree... at the dealership they called it a "pad" as opposed to a gasket. They said they checked the codes and calibration... but I don't believe there's much to calibrate... My guess is they want to keep water off the sensor... can anyone confirm?

From what I've been reading, they need to remove the sensor to attach the "pad". If you remove the sensor, grill, anything nearby, get a wheel alignment done ect (not kidding), you are supposed to get the sensor recalibrate at a dealer.

This issue is developing because (some) dealers are refusing to do this calibration with aftermarket parts (tires, grill, suspension) leaving you possibly without a large part of the tech packages you paid for.

Very high chances this is all just overreacting due to liability worries, but who K ows.

Yeah, I think most of the fix work can be done without taking the grill off, especially on the mesh type grills, not that it takes long anyway. If you have a pro type grill, the fix is on the front side of the radar so removing it would make it easier. You can remove the grill in less than a minute if you have a screwdriver and 10mm socket ready.

I noticed that in the fix paperwork the radar unit has an FP on the sticker in the back. So far all the radar units in this post have had only the F on the back - I wonder if that is a picture of the new updated radar unit...can someone with a 2019 that is in the clear post a picture of the back side of their unit please...wondering if it will have the FP on it instead of just the F.

    Capture.jpg

Seems to me like the NEW version of the radar unit comes WITH 3 small vent holes...too small for water intrusion...:notsure:

So you don't have a different grill? No lift? All that's different from factory stock is the tires are now a few millimeters larger in diameter? What was the factory size and what size are they now?

Tell them to write down their refusal to do the service and sign and date it. Tell them you'd like two copies if not too much trouble, one for you and one for your attorney. Or tell them to disable the damned thing as you never requested it be installed on your truck in the first place. Personally I hate all this tech.... I know how to fucking drive....been doing it almost 50 years now with out a wreck or running over a pedestrian...... although I have encountered a few I would have liked to. :)

What's an attorney going to do other than rack up a bunch of billable hours that you will have to pay?

Thank you, but I have that page. What I am asking for is anyone with a 2019 with TSS and NOT ON THE RECALL could you please take a picture of the back of your radar unit and post it. I want to know if the FP radar unit in the picture is the NEW IMPROVED version. If you have only an F on the back, it is more than likely your truck IS part of the recall....

Here in Nor-Cal, we've had a lot of rain this year. It rained almost every day in February.... I had one day when for the first few minutes after starting my truck when I got a TSS issue. I chalked it up as to too much water on the sensor... After a minute or so it cleared and went to normal. This is with the 8112s, 5160s in the rear, AAL and the Pro grill.... Every other time, it has worked perfectly....

Then again, I'm not a huge fan of this kind of technology. To me it's like the safety on a pistol, not needed and at times a hassle...
I just don't wanna end up in a situation where the "safety" causes me to loose my life... All my carry guns do not have safeties.
