Press that button when you get stuck. A light will pop up on the dash after you press it. It's not fully engaged until that light stops blinking and goes solid. It likely won't immediately engage, you may need to roll the tires a bit for it to fully engage. That's all you need to know really. If you want to know more look into rear differential lockers. That button locks your rear differential.

 

I was flabbergasted at first too. It’s a warm dry state thing.
