Didn't know the 2018 Tacoma's collect data on your driving. Throttle, speed, distance, and images. WTF? This is software I need to know how to control and turn off. Is there something available to us to do this?

That last paragraph is concerning, where do you disable the image recordings etc?

It's most likely that the data is intended for Toyota to improve their safety features. If you get into an accident and TSS did something wrong or should have done something better they need that info to fix it.

On the flip side if you're liable for an accident there's technically proof being stored in your truck. It's unlikely they can access the data without physical access to the truck so I would worry too much. I would prefer I had a 2017 without tss though...

this is the new norm. everything you do is being recorded, analyzed and used without your knowledge. your truck is no exception.

Welcome to the world of modern computing. If you want incredibly advanced functionality and automation in your technology, it's all based on machine learning from real world data. Gotta pay to play unfortunately.

Good news is that current opinion of the courts is that recorded data is the property of the vehicle owner and the owner must consent before it's used etc

Also most don't regularly store data...but constantly overwrite the data until a triggering event causes it to lock a set amount of data, usually less than a minute

Any number of computers can store data for an event including your airbag control module, powertrain control module, roll over sensors, etc but in 5 years, no one will have access to how you drove the truck now....it can not store the data that long

Please lock me from this thread. I know the policy if no politics and stuff. I will not able to stop myself from an anti-government tirade.

I do not want the banz.

I take it as just in case of an accident, they have data points to see who's at fault and what really happened. Idk why you guys are freaking out.

The TSS recordings possibly could have helped that fella who sheared the front axle and had trouble with the warranty. Or it could have also proved his negligence. I’d rather have it.

This is a surprise? Is there a device out now days that DON'T record everything you do? Just look at the very device you posted on...

Also, this type of stuff is in almost every car manufactured after 1996 and makes it possible that your car has warning lights etc for all the various sensors and such

The same system will alert you if your vehicle has a problem with the airbag system or even the check engine light

On a positive note - this is a cool way to give yourself a bit more privacy on your browsing history on your phone and PC so an ISP can't as easily view/throttle... only vaguely related to the topic here, but at least one way to reduce big brotherish monitoring. I can attest that it's faster too.

Toyota will release information in response to an official request by police, court of law, or "a government agency".
Or For use by Toyota for use in a lawsuit.
So will we be able to access this info to defend ourselves?
Kinda like your Miranda rights. "Can and will be used AGAINST you in the court of law." Can't be used to help you, that's called hearsay.
Then again..If you don't do anything wrong, what do you have to worry about? CYA cover your ass!
