It may also be worth your while to check your insurance policy. Some companies have as part of the policy that any modifications made by the owner to the vehicle that interferes with any safety system or manufactures data recording system, can be cause to deny a claim.

Having been a LEO for 32 years and a collision reconstruction specialist we would on occasion download the black boxes for information, but only in cases involving death or serious bodily injury. Depending on the circumstances we would obtain a warrant because information obtained by others means would indicate probable cause a crime was committed. In certain situations a warrant is not required because of the “inherent mobility” of a vehicle. If the vehicle is on a public way and there is probable cause a crime has, is, or about to be committed no warrant is required. Only when the vehicle is in Police impound or on private property is a warrant required because there is no longer a “inherent mobility”.

The new Camry goes even further. It stats the mileage back to the dealer and the dealer calls you to bring it in. That was an interesting conversation to listen too! Never knew the f-bomb could be used in so many ways!

I was LEO electronic surveillance technician for 13 years and there is a company that makes vehicle forensic equipment for under $10,000. One sample report was over 300 pages long they sent showed lot of information to the point of when you placed the vehicle in gear, opened doors, your infotainment system, stereo system, once connected to your cell phone retains all that information. Their device was used to catch a man who assaulted a woman after he had deleted her data from his cell phone and said he did not know that woman, the vehicle proved otherwise as it retained the GPS coordinates and times of where the vehicle had been. Vehicles retain loads of information. In many cases the OBDII connection is used in other cases the individual modules are removed, powered and downloaded separately. In today,s vehicles there are many modules that retain information. Our Tacoma's have something like 20 microprocessors in them and most all need some sort of memory to function.

I bet the system is recording more information than that. Don't be surprised if this info ends up with the car insurance companies

Who cares. I don't drive like a doucher. I don't transport drugs. I don't buy my insurance from a white trash army guy. I don't buy a basic insurance policy limits. I'm human.

IMO the only people that are crying about this are the ones that drive like shit

Another little gotcha that I see everywhere.
Not using your driving lights is disabling a safety device.
Computer records it. Insurance agent told me it could come back to bite you.

    Quit Bitchin.
    Everyone has two choices.

    1. Live like most other first world people and accept all the rules and responsibilities or
    2. Leave it all. Sell everything. Get rid of all tech. No credit cards. No bank. Get pre 1975 no electronics anywhere vehicle. No property ownership. Cash in jars. Go to ground. Move constantly.

Or, STFU and quit bitching about tech that is only on every new vehicle, Toyota or not lol.
