Hey all, just picked up my truck about 10 days ago. I've been lurking around here since then reading up. I've already had a couple of 4runners, so not new to toyota.

I wanted to see if anybody has experienced this issue that came up this morning. Last night I rinsed off my truck after a light rainstorm, just to get the dust off, then wiped down with towels to dry up the water. Today I got to work and when I closed the door, with smartkey in pocket, the dash still says "key detected in vehicle" and the warning triangle pops up when I try to lock with the sensor on the door handle. It unlocks fine, starts and shuts off fine, just wont lock with the handle, and possibly still thinks a key is in the truck. My wife was never in the ruck with her key, yesterday or today, and my key is inside my toolbox right now.??? anyone have any experience with this? Thoughts are appreciated.

There are two settings as I recall. Inside and close proximity. Default is proximity I think.

It's probably not too difficult to figure out as there are only a couple of "general" settings available to modify. You'll probably figure it out faster and also learn to navigate your settings rather than waiting for a decent response here. But just my two cents. And also, perhaps yesterday you just didn't notice, as the truck would not automatically change settings one you.

I definitely would have noticed yesterday, that's the only way I have been locking the vehicle since my dad showed me that trick of using the little lines on the handle. I really like that feature, since it keeps me from having to dig around in my pocket while wrestling a baby in the morning at daycare. It did work yesterday, but seems something changed after I washed it off.

    it is.
So any other ideas as to why my truck thinks there is a key inside all of the time?
Correct me if i'm wrong, but toyota has been using this system for several years now right? I would think most of the bugs would have been worked out by now.

I'd double check that the other key isn't in the glove box or center console, for sanity's sake.

Then pull the battery cable for a few minutes. Which is annoying but might reset whatever glitch seems to be happening. Kind of like restarting a computer .

Although if the key is in the tool box... might be close enough to think its still in the truck. I'd do the settings change first. Just to be sure.

    Good luck!

The truck was smart , it knew the key was inside . We always blame technology first then that oops moment comes and you realize technology is awesome and human error is human. I think you owe your new Toyota truck an apology. Lol Welcome to TW

    Like, so many.
This happened on the first day with my truck. I couldn't figure it out. I eventually realized the second key was in the center console.
