I decided to go a different direction and mount the boxes by the tailgate with no tonneau. I quickly discovered that there wasn't enough width between the wheels for two boxes side-by-side. By mounting by the tailgate, locking the gate completely secures the boxes without any other locks or hardware, giving it a really simple operation. You can install and remove the boxes in under 10 seconds with one hand. When the tailgate is locked, the latches are blocked and you cannot reach down to try and slide the boxes off the brackets (and the gate would prevent the sliding needed anyway) I will post photos shortly.

Hopefully, this gives a good idea of how my new setup works.

I've been thinking about a similar setup in my truck and correct me if I'm wrong you did decide to drill into your bed, is that correct? Why did you ultimately decide to do it?

So, I did something kinda similar for my rig. On my tailgate i have two Packout bases mounted. At the front of the bed I built a frame out of extruded aluminum that i used a Etsy sourced Packout base (all steel and smaller all around than the plastic ones) to mount to my MOLLE rack. A couple of 1/4-20 screws and its totally out.
