Hey guys, i bought a 2021 TRD Pro and plan on doing some easy offroading with it. These are going to be mostly local day trips in Colorado, so i am wondering what mods i really need for this truck?

My goal is try to keep the weight off, so i am questioning whether i need to go the new bumper/winch route or not. What mods do you guys recommend i do given that i won’t be overnighting or doing any extreme trails?

    Thanks for the help.

Ditch the ‘for show’ steps for real sliders or just take them off and sell them to someone who won’t go off-road while they are new and worth something.

Other than that put gas in it and go. It’s extremely capable straight out of the wrapper.

PPF would be worthwhile for a new pro though I don’t consider that a mod.

Welcome to the Pro club! Your TRD Pro looks great in white.

I’ve owned my Pro for 15 months now and use it similarly to how you mentioned. My truck is my daily driver, but I do trail driving in the Central Texas area and also take summer trips to Colorado. I installed the BA 4x4 Bumper with a Smittybuilt 10K winch, have upgraded my air intake, Meso tail light stage 1 upgrade, and installed a bunch of electronics and LED lights. My Pro gets worse milage than my 2016 TRD OR did, but I chalk it up to this one being heavier with my mods and the taller stance.

Installing the BA 4x4 Hiline was an adventure, but not terribly difficult if you follow the directions and cut the bumper right.

One of my favorite mods has been the Meso Taillight stage 1, which I’d recommend doing early on. Be sure to buy it with the resistor packs though…

In the future I plan on doing the Wescott Customs upgrade to get a little more lift at the same time as upgrading my tires once the OEM Goodyears wear out in another year or so. I’d also like to get RCI Sliders soon too. I’m holding off on those upgrades until I am outside of the 36K warranty period. Ultimately I’d like to install the Magnason Supercharger when I get to 60K miles and its time to replace spark plugs too.

Its a fun truck and I’ve been impressed with how well it handles both on and off road.

For easy off-road you might want some water and snacks. The taco will perform out of the box perfectly.

A set of sliders along with a front, transmission & transfer case skid. You may never need them but you never know where that last left turn you took will take you. Remember your warranty won't pay for a new engine or trans cuz you put a hole in the pan.

Your steps are fine. Everyone here thinks every truck should be a crawler. Take opinions here with a grain of salt and inb4 people start sharing their own pics for "suggestions". Just browse the forum slowly and patiently ;)

Check out the usual "What did you do to your 3rd gen today?" thread. There are tons of subsections in this forum. Suspension, armor, even a bunch of people selling used stuff too. Just browse then you can decide what you need/want. If anything, take some time familiarizing yourself with the truck as it sits... like maintenance related stuff. There is a nice thread covering basic maintenance steps here too.

Did we just become best friends?? Capable out of the box, for sure. I added SOS DOM sliders and the Eibach spring upgrade + 1” blocks for a lift and level, in order to fit 33” tires for additional clearance. Of these, sliders seem the most necessary because of shopping carts, doors, trees, and high rocks.

@dowNNshift why do you recommend getting the Meso Taillights early on? Pictures?

Drive it first and figure out what you really need, and don’t fret about keeping up with the Joneses. That said, some decent sliders would be what I’d do.

Welcome to TW! Be prepared to waste so much time here. Lol

As some have said, it's fairly capable day 1. Upgrading the tires would be the best thing you could do in my book.

Thanks for the help, guys! So I guess my only real mods to consider would be better sliders and possibly some armor underneath. That isn’t too bad, actually.

I will start researching but suggestions on these items would be appreciated.

    Thanks again, guys!

Oh yah, I change my answer. OEM tires are incapable of most anything outside of street/freeway, but maybe even iffy on them during a hard rain.

I would test it out on a day trip and see if you feel there are any needs. You should be able to explore in CO fairly easily as it is without getting in over your head. Nice looking ride!

For light offroading, which I'm assuming is trail riding and a bit of mud, you don't need to do a damn thing. Find some like minded folks to trail ride with and see where things lead you. Don't start buying crap until you find yourself wishing you had said crap (I know, I know it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it) but just ease into things. If you find yourself wanting to get more adventurous, and hit the more rugged trails, then you can start expanding your gear. Otherwise you end up being that guy with a bunch of expensive off-road gear you'll never use.

Better tires (keeping stock size) would be helpful. The rest you can figure out as you go once you learn what you like and dislike.
