Thanks for the help! What is the full name of the fluid recommended? Is this only a toyota thing/brand? Will see how far I can get before sending an SOS via pm lol

I usually just use a generic Dextron/mercon ATF. Usually whatever is on sale.

If you don't want to mess with taking the top off of the reservoir I was able to clean mine out with an acetone bath and then shop vaccing from where the cap goes. Everything came off the screen.

For fluid I used Valvoline full synthetic ATF.

I also have added an inline filter and power steering cooler but that's more than y'all need.

I thought about going that route but to be honest I found it easier to bust mine apart it was so filthy.

I changed the oil and cleaned out the reserviour. The reservouir was not as dirty as I thought but they oil was terrible. My guess is that it was breaking down at high temps. Took it for a test drive and so far so good. thanks for all the input.

For anyone in the future waiting for a new PS pump to quiet down, it can take a long time! I replaced my pump in december of last year, and it just finally stopped whining. I thought I had ruined the pump when I first installed it because I didn't attach the high pressure hose properly and it sprayed everywhere and ran without fluid for a few seconds. But as it turns out it just needed a long time and another flush of fluid to quiet down. I went in and cleaned the 95% clean reservoir screen a few days ago and added the fluid I had lost from doing that and all is well! I was about ready to go pull an oem pump from the junkyard and try that before I shelled out another 300 bucks for another oe pump. Not sure why it took that long but be patient!

You should replace the hoses when you pony up for a new pump or rack...

That's the reason for many failures......last forever do they,
they rot from the inside out...

I replaced the return line with one from rockauto because it was slightly kinked in the hardline portion.

Is there any way to tell if the high pressure hose is failing from the outside, or just one of those things that should be done after so many years?

Its the high pressure one that is the expensive one....$160 me thinks for a gates plug and play one from autozone...
if its 15 or more years old I'd replace it.......
I plan on doing mine every 10yrs or so...

Interesting thing is they never bust......they just rot in silence...
and then your pump screams bloody murder later on down the line...

Changing that fluid every 2 or 3 yrs will greatly increase the life of all mentioned...

twice a year I drain and replace the PS fluid using maxlife atf just in the reservoir ...
probably less than 20% of system volume.
its like a 5 min job. .......like 12oz...

Of course that was after flushing the whole system and switching to Valvoline maxlife....

The rear differential is in the same shoes......old fluid will eat the seals..

    a rear axle seal/bearing job runs $1000~1200....

new diff fluid is like $20......

salvage third members start at $1200 ~ $1500.....

these trucks are too old to let go......its down to salvage on many of the parts...

I like the Valvoline synthetic in the squeeze bag.

    .

    .

mine takes a bag and a half

Advance use to put on sale all the time .......2 for $25

think Amazon they're like $14 ea....

Just make sure the fill plug is not seized, undo that BEFORE you pull the drain plug....
I had to round off the drain one to get it out......had to order a new

and on mine a six point 15/16 socket had a snugger fit than the 32mm.....
so I always use that when I service again.

    or cheapskate's.

And the diff plugs, those two crush washers are not supposed to be reused....

I put new ones on .....and will reuse those again because I was gentle with them..
