My personal rule of thumb for towing is go somewhere around half capacity. You may want to look at a Tundra SR, 8000 lbs towing, 1800 lbs payload, 405 TQ @ 2000rpm. Not a huge seller, can find some deals on them if you look hard enough.

Gets roughly the same mpg as a 3G Taco.

    :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Too bad it is a Camry/minivan/car motor that is in a truck!!

But you have a MT so all is forgiven [even if it is a sport ;)]..

So where you you guys buying 2023 Tacomas for $37,000 and V6 at that? New prices here are 40-45k plus, the pre-owned low mile ones certified are $31 - 33 k. V6 & automatic.

Might be able to get a ‘23 SR Tacoma with the V6 sub $40K.

Seeing some low mile ‘18-21 around the $30K mark here in Idaho and adjacent states.

Haha! Well In all honesty it’s a Camry with a bed, sooooo it’s a perfect engine application :)

It’s a sport that does many TRD OR things;) And yes MT makes it that much more special!

It really is good. I dunno why so many folks make fun of it.

It’s good decent low, great mid and awesome high end. My previous trucks had no top end. Really sucked on the highway.

I admit I loved the 4.0 that was in both my 2nd gens, but they did wheeze out in the upper RPM's. I had a 2021 TRD OR with the automatic and just didn't like the drive train. Bought my current '22 6MT and it's a different truck. It's not too bad down low, but once you get on it, it wakes up. I hit the rev limiter one time by accident merging onto the interstate. It was really damn peppy for a second and just fell flat. Ooops :anonymous:

4.0 is a good motor yeah. I drove buddies 2015 taco and my dad owns 2 4Rs, one 2008 and one 2013. It’s just missing top end which is very appreciated at highway speeds.

Peak low-end torque at 600 rpm less with the 4.0L. That's the ticket. Mine doesn't either. It's working, but not that hard and it's accomplishing it below peak RPM to do the job. I don't think I have ever had the thing at/above 5,000 rpm. Definitely never hit/detected any rev-limiter (if so equipped... That would be mean: like yelling at the dog when he brings you the wrong pair of slippers.) [Well, maybe that one time when I was running for my life from a big-rig when I mis-calculated trying to merge into the right-lane from the on-ramp...] then again everything was screaming: including me, engine and dog). Maybe it's an age thing. ;)

Don’t listen to all this jibber jabber. The 3 rd Gen is nicer all around . As for the drive train it’s fine. It has turned out to be very reliable. As far as power, People like to complain ,but honestly it’s got more power than most cars did 30 -40 years ago. I drove 8 cylinder cars with less power. Hell a 1985 corvette brand new back then had 230 horse power . That was considered a big deal of the time.Granted more torque from the v8 330 ish . But we are talking about a much larger motor with 2 xtra cylinders . I think the 3.5 is a pretty decent motor, that produces decent HP for its size.

I don’t know about earlier models but from my experience the 3rd gen is a poor tow vehicle. I’m thinking about selling mine for this reason.

So do all 3d Generation V6s have the exact same engine or has there been improvements from one year to the next? From someone's posting it appears the 3.5 has more Hp than the 4.0 except for a minor difference in Torque.

I found this online and it appears to be saying what I said.... the 3.5 can tow more than my 4.0
    4. Tacoma 4.0 vs 3.5 Towing
Curb weight of Tacoma 4.0 is up to 4220 lbs. It can tow up to 3500 pounds. It is the maximum limit of that vehicle.

On the other hand, Tacoma 3.5’s curb weight is up to 4680 lbs. It has a max towing capacity of 6800 pounds.

So Tacoma 3.5 has better towing capacity. It can tow 3300 pounds more compared to the Tacoma 4.0. Towing capacity depends on the engine’s power and 3.5’s engine is better that way.

It is nicer all the way around, absolutely love mine, more than enough power for me. Rides nice, shifts fine. That said someone looking for a night and day difference over the 2nd Gen it really isn’t. Personally I wouldn’t pull nearly 5000 lbs with it, they are however real happy 3500 and under. OP stated the trailer is 4700, assuming that is dry, so maybe 5200-5700 wet? That is getting close to max. We owned a construction company, grew up towing heavy equipment. Different trucks pull the same weight better or worse. I like a bit of overkill, buy twice what you need for towing. It is easier on equipment and your nerves. People’s opinion on that will vary as we all have different levels of comfort zones.

Same engine, they have adjusted the tune over the years though. Depending on who ask some are better than others, both factory and aftermarket. Haven’t felt the need to tune mine, but don’t go over 3500 lbs towing either. Have done close to max hauling gravel, it wasn’t fun even going a short distance.

FYI The GVWR of the camper is 4500 that is the max fully loaded with a tank of water, LP tank and Battery.
GVWR or Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is what the trailer manufacturer has determined as being the maximum weight that the trailer can safely be towed at. 30 Gallons of water at 8.33 = 249.9 Lbs
