Please look at post 95 from @Dm93 and how he flushes the heater core. By disconnecting the upper and lower heater hoses, you have isolated the heater core. Any debris in the core will "freely" flush out and will not enter into the block or radiator.

Yes when draining the block, opening the block drain valve while removing the lower hose is like...
    when you shotgun a beer.

will do, but then he flushes water through the heater hoses as well and i'm assuming one direction of water will exit out the lower rad hose and the opposite will exit out the other hose?

Most vehicles don't have block drains, Toyota is one of the few that do.

I usually pull the upper and lower hose off and heater hoses (or what ever hoses are accessible) and flush through everything both ways best I can with a garden hose, it's not the ideal way to do it but it does a pretty good job of getting most of the crap out.

Most of the garbage in the cooling system settles out in the radiator and heater core, on vehicle without block drains you can't get everything out but you can get the majority of it.

If you change your coolant at the recommended intervals and use the correct coolant there should never be any sediment or particulates in the system to worry about flushing out, most of that stuff comes from the coolant breaking down and some coolants will even start attacking the plastic and rubber parts of the cooling system when they break down (GM Dexcool is really bad about this).

It depends which hose the thermostat is in, I'm not sure on the 4 cyl if it's on the inlet or outlet side. It will come out of the one that doesn't have the thermostat in it.
Like I said if you have always kept your coolant clean I wouldn't be overly concerned about going crazy flushing the block, do the heater core and the radiator, run water through the block best you can, let it all drain and fill it back up with the proper coolant/ distilled water blend.
Total capacity is about 9 Quarts on a 4 cyl.

i just looked it up and it says the thermostat on a 2.7 litre is at the other end of the lower rad hose at the water pump so does that mean i should disconnect my upper rad hose just to avoid any sediment going into my new radiator? As far as keeping my coolant clean ummm,no comment lol.

Pull them both off if you want to keep stuff out of your rad.

    Yes

Yes don't use too much pressure, that's usually not a problem on a good flowing heater core but if its restricted you may have to go back and forth several times to get the crud to come out.

I didn't read through the whole thread, but if it hasn't been mentioned,a no-spill funnel makes filling a radiator a breeze.

just spit balling, after you flush should you blow hoses out with compressed air even if drains are opened?

Also,no need to worry about which one is inlet or outlet except when reattaching to firewall since i'll be putting water through both right?

Not really as long as you put the hoses back in the correct locations when your done.

You may already know this but with those spring clamps on used hoses try to get them back in the same position they were (usually you can see the imprint on the hose) when you put them back on or they may not seal.
