    Hey guys hoping to get your thoughts on this;

    Last week I put all new brakes on the Taco. New shoes and drums are causing shudder. I am certain it is the rear brakes because it occurs with parking brake engaged. I replaced the drums with a second set but still shudders. I even adjusted the shoes so there was no drag at all but still shudder. Seems pretty obvious to me the drums are out of round but I am going to measure to confirm. I understand runout tolerance is .015" so I am curious to what my drums will read.

    Has anyone had defective drums right out of the box that needed machining?

    Cheers!

    Couple of things: check to verify the part numbers on what you installed is for your make/model (I have been stung hard by that in the past). Also, make sure there is no grease/oil on the shoe faces or drum lining. Obvious, but.....

    I would have to suspect you missed some rebuild steps with geasing pivots, springs, adjusters etc but maybe not.
    Do the brakes always grab when applied?
    Cheap shoes may be issue or after install did you do the break in stops required for material transfer and optimum performance. Most brands list how to do it.

    Yes if drums are not stored horizontally after being made they can become out of round.
    Every drum you buy has at least that warranty so exchange free or get your money back don't turn new ones as most shops are clueless unless a real machine shop.

    Turns out they were out of round. Had them machined 0.040” o_O I exchanged them once already and those were crap too. It was more convenient to get them turned but cost me extra hundred bucks.
