New Taco in lot paint defects

I stopped by a dealer on the way home from out of state and noticed they had a black TRD-Off rd double cab. I've made a deal already on one near my house but wanted to stop and "look" at this one.

I had my cam with me so i snapped these 2 pics of the paint. The one I am going to pick up (most likely) does have tiny chips here and there and there is a "white" scratch on the door but it doesn't bother me much. But after seeing these paint defects I am wondering how bad the paint is gonna chip away etc... on mine?

Is this acceptable for a new 2009 model on the lot? Can you try to get them to come down even more because of these defects? I tried with the black one near me and they would not budge saying "this is acceptable" and the salesman even went to show me another Taco on the lot with some minor chips and said, "take it up with corporate" Wow, i mean if you were to say buy a Mercedes E63 AMG (my brother just bought one) and you saw this? No way would this fly with ANYONE. Is this just poor maintenance on the dealers part? If so then I think they should discount it more...

So I'm wondering, what's the deal? Is this just going to get worse? Can you get more of a discount? Or is it just "deal with it"?

 

thats acceptable if your driving the truck through salt mines. Your seeing the start of a shitty paint job, aka, lemon. It's probably worth your drive to go a couple hours to another couple dealers to buy a truck thats not chipped to shit. I definitely wouldn't buy a new truck that looked like it was rubbed down with broken glass, but thats just me. Full price = full vehicle, kinda hard to take pride in something scratched to shit.

 

I'd say no in a heartbeat unless they promised a brand new paint job. Eventually the paint on these trucks gets chipped to hell, its really thin and mine has a ton on it, especially on the front. I don't even follow people close so I don't know how they got there. Regardless, on a brand new truck, NO F'N Way.

 

Truly unacceptable for a new truck on the lot,no matter how it happened.They should discount the price to account for the damage,but I can't believe they even have it out there b4 fixing it,and refusing to adjust price?A major WTF there!I would ask to test drive it & go to a bodyshop & get a fix estimate & show the dealer what it would cost to repair.

 

Hell no, don't just deal with it. I picked mine up at the end of May and, to their credit, the dealer intercepted me before I got within 20 feet and pointed out a 2 inch long scratch on the driver-side door right under the mirror. I could tell from their reaction they wanted to see whether I would "live with it" or not. My reply was "What can you do to fix it?"

I had an appointment scheduled with the paint shop before I left and a loaner to use on the day they repainted the entire door. After they painted it I drove it around the lot and parked at multiple angles to check out how well the color matched and I am pleased overall.

That was just for one small scratch in one place... I scoured the truck before purchase and found nothing else wrong with the paint so I was ok with how it worked out. From what I can see if your pics, if they wanted to discount the price $3k or so on top of rebates to make up for the expense and hassle of getting a whole new paint job then maybe, just maybe I'd consider it. Somehow I bet they'd just choose to repaint it themselves.

 

It is not acceptable, but it happens alot to new vehicles by either a careless lot worker or the delivery driver who beats the shit out of every single vehicle. My taco was lucky enough not to have any damage but my silverado was not it has 2 dents in it that were there since new. Both were bought from the same stealership and I walked around their lot for the hell of it to check out other vehicles on the lot and alot of them were showing defects and the salesman told me it is either from the guys that clean the snow off in the winter or from the delivery truck. I don't stress about mine though, it is minor damage and they are both work trucks so there is inevitably going to be a few dings here or there.

 

That first scratch/ding is always the hardest, and someone's already done it for you! Personally, it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me. The paint on these trucks sucks anyways...

With that said, I'd be more inclined not to buy because of the dealer response. If this is the kind of treatment you get when you haven't even purchased the truck yet, just think of how they'll treat you when you bring it in for an issue.

 

yup, i'm going to a different dealer across town tomorrow as they have a TRD off rd in gray and that's another color I like. i'm going to really look it over this time.

that first pic i posted someone told me that is definitely a neglect issue. Either tree sap or bird dropping left on the paint for a long time before being cleaned off. looks like dessert ground cracking under the clear coat. yikes!!!

both pics were of the hood. so if it was new doesn't it have the protective white film on!?!??!

the dealer i am dealing with the chips were on the hood also and there was a scratch on the door... i was surprised when he showed me another Taco in silver with a tiny chip on the hood also. its like "yeah this happens all the time its no big deal"

I should have looked at the SR5s they had on the lot, i wonder if they had any chips. I just find it odd that the paint is this weak. makes me worry.

 

Dude thats clear coat peeling... ALREADY?! Run away, and FAST!!

 

Run, run far away! Just imagine if after you bought the truck, if something else went wrong, these guys are not going to help you. When you are buying a brand new truck, it should be delivered to you in BRAND NEW condition. No scratches, dents, dings or excessive mileage. Buy from another dealer man

 

yeah i wouldn't buy it with a paint defect that bad...maybe a slight scratch or something isn't such a big deal but that looks messed up

 

on the first pic it seemed like it was UNDER the clear coat. no peeling. so it looks like they parked it somewhere and a bird dropped a bomb and they just did not care to clean it.

but its sad that someone will buy it without knowing...

tomorrow i'm going to be looking at each truck to see what i find.

i went to a different dealer this morn before they opened that has a TRDoffrd in gray and i am shocked. the hood had tiny tiny specs that look very similar to pic #1 i posted. i tried to take pics but none of them came out. no chips i could see but it had a few tiny "cracks" is the best way i can describe it in the clear coat.

i went on to look at 3 other Tacomas (SR5s) and only one had a few tiny "stains" on the hood that seemed like it was permanent. Sap?

i went on to look at the other cars on the lot and was shocked again to see these tiny stains on a Prius and a 4Runner and a Land Cruiser. all on the hood. Granted maybe these can buff out but i used my finger and it was not going anywhere.

I think I'm getting OCD. At first I didn't really care but now I'm thinking what is up with the paint?????? Are these cars on the lot not waxed?????

What is the warranty for paint on the Taco/Toyotas???????? I am going back to this dealer in the afternoon to deal so...

When we bought my truck, my husband and I did a full inspection of the truck and we did find a couple chips. We refused to buy the truck unless they fixed them. They had a stupid dealer tag on the front bumper and we made them remove the tag and fix the holes in the bumper - which required an entire paint job to the front bumper.

You're paying big bucks for a 'new' truck. Either force them to fix the defects, find yourself a perfect truck, or majorly bargain on the price.
If they won't work with you - then find another dealer.

 

i am concerned at the fact that the paint chipping and "etching" in the clear coat is so common it seems. but i guess that's just how it goes.

The dealer said, "we can throw in a bottle of touch up no problem" so no they were not willing to do anything.

lets see what todays dealer says...

 

just got back from the dealer with the gray TRDoffrd and test drove it and when we got back i addressed the paint issue. the salesguy at first denied seeing anything wrong with the paint. finally he said that is just a small little crack in the paint and its no problem, the other stuff can be cleaned during prep. i asked to speak to the sales manager and he came out and said the same thing. they said its not a problem. when i pushed it more they told me why don't i look at a SR5 instead!!!!! i told them i do not want an SR5 and that I want (1st mistake for admitting I want it) the gray TRD but the paint issue bothers me and i felt that they should 1- repaint it (they both laughed hysterically at me) 2 - discount it at least 1k off on top of the 6k off MSRP, they said no and the sales manager walked away...the salesman said why not look at the SR5? i walked. underneath the truck showed tiny bits of corrosion which ok, i can live with that but the clear coat with a tiny cracks, like you guys said, is unacceptable! they think it is.

There is another dealer I can go to right now but they only have the TRD in silver which is an ok color, but again I'm gonna inspect the paint now. we'll see...

 

well why not drive an hour to a close city and check out their trd's??? Find the color you want and get it, don't settle for a diff color, cause later on you'll wish you had gone with what you really wanted. And don't get stressed with the dealers, just be like well I'll leave this cracked up soon to be rusting machine to someone else, do you have anything else, and when they say no just leave.

 

Those paint defects are unacceptable. I can with my polishes correct the paint but I shouldn't have to do that with a new truck. Any good dealership worth their salt have a body/paint shop to take care of serious defects like those presented.

My ole man bought a ford escort that sat on the dealer lot for 12 months, one of the conditions of the purchase was to shot another coat of clear over the entire car, that's how bad the paint was, all that for a 12K shitbox.

 

Yeah, funny you should mention all this....

I just washed my truck today (it's been a few months) and noticed a lot of chips which I repaired.

The kicker.... when I bought the truck, we had them fill-in the license plate holes and they repainted the bumper. My husband pushed them into giving that front bumper an even longer paint warrantee because its a respray.

Well...today I noticed 2 chips about 1/8-1/4" wide on the front bumper in the area they would've beem resprayed. It was totally grey underneath and the one looked like the paint started to 'bubble up' and you can probably flake the paint off with your fingernail.

Looks like I might be making a trip back to the dealer here soon.

But damn, this paint really does suck!!
