Hey everyone! New to the forum here (previous Colorado owner, but switching to the light side). I’m looking at a Tacoma but all the research I’ve done has made me very aware of the rust on the 2nd gen. I also know about the recall, so this one might be eligible in the future. My question is, would you buy or would you keep looking? I noticed some miscellaneous rust in the engine bay with all the hose connections and smaller bolts. The main concern is the strut/shock mount.
Here’s a couple of the pictures. It has 138k miles, oil changes at Toyota every 5k miles religiously, but also lived it’s whole life in Long Island NY. (2014 TRD Sport LB). Thanks in advance! Looking forward to joining the Taco club and hitting some trails here in CO.

Not enough pictures of the frame to give you my advice.
Also, was it just oil changes?
or did they do other maintenance just as religiously?

Thats road salt rust like all of us who live in the north have. HOWEVER, you need to look at the FRAME, paying close attention to the INSIDE of it near the cat on the drivers side. All tacomas will have surface rust like that from NY. But AGAIN, look at the FRAME!!! Google Tacoma frame rot, and read about it..

The carfax shows all the maintenance being done at the right intervals (maybe even a little generous on some of the intervals). Diff fluid at 40k, front brakes/brake fluid replaced at 55k, spark plugs at 60k, etc. The dealer here in Denver bought it from an auction, which is fine, but kind of always makes you wonder why the dealership sent a 2014 Tacoma to auction.

Check the frame near the catalytic converter, take a hammer and give some gentle tap, you will know if the inside is good or not.

You say that the truck had all his oil change at the dealer ? I don't recognise the oil filter, the Toyota oem is black, this white one surely don't came from Toyota.

2014 don't have recall for the SAI system but check the foam inside the pump to be sure it's still good (and if needed use the uni filter mod to get rid of the foam filter).

I think there a part missing on the windows, check on the passenger side there a little piece at the bottom where the cowl and window meet, i don't see it on the driver side.

I need to check mine but the bed seem very close of the frame behind the rear shock. Maybe it's an illusion, but check the support bushing for the cab/bed. At 138K miles, that need to be checked.

Use this cheat sheet for the maintenance. If the diff is still on the same fluid after near 100K miles... You need to drain that and look...

Awesome, thank you! I noticed the oil filter as well. Since the truck went from the dealer to the auction, I'm assuming someone did an oil change along the way.
