3/4 of the “reliable” door locks on my 2013 4runner didn’t work after 5 years. Only one failed during warranty. The passenger lock just went out on the 2020 4Runner I bought my daughter. The driver’s door lock on my 991.1 is dead.

I’ve never had a power window fail on any of my vehicles, even on a POS lemon 87 Camaro I had.

My mom had multiple GMs 1500 SUVs from the early 2000s and probably half of them had issues with the power windows falling off the rails or just grinding up the actuators. She also had two failed sunroofs on a 2008 and a 2014.

And those are the same people that will trade it in with less than 60,000 miles or even leased it for 36,000 miles.

Agreed, almost any car built in the last 20 years will go 200k w/ regular maintenance. However, My 08 has more than 200k and I have no issues and nothing "clapped out" lol.

I'd argue that people like you who don't keep a vehicle (amongst other things) for a long period of time are the biggest part of this world's obsession with overconsumption directly resulting in the environmental disasters we're facing.

What environmental disaster are we facing that is caused by someone who decides to buy a new vehicle every 3 to 5 years?

lol, I dunno man.... It seems pretty logical that if everyone in this world bought a new vehicle every 3 years, the amount of raw materials it takes to make shit is going to quickly destroy the lands. Think, for one minute, about the extraction, processing, and elimination of waste. Do I really I need to point you to the reports of plastics filling our oceans, killing our marine life?

Should we also buy a new house every 5 years? Why not clear more forests in the name of human expansion. I'm sure the animals - and entire ecosystem - will figure it out, right? I spent months in Louisiana watching them clear trees for the paper mills and housing developments. Animals are being forced into areas they aren't intended to be in because they have no place else to go.

I'm probably the furthest thing from a tree hugging liberal, but it's very obvious the world cannot sustain the materialistic desires of humans to own the newest (insert anything) every couple of years.....

Those cars traded usually go towards the used/pre owned market. Leased cars I can see swapping every few years but financed is a long term deal

If you pay cash you tend to keep them awhile. At least I do. My 1G is 25 years old, still have it. Only bought a new one because the 1G was breaking down so often don’t trust it on trips. Demoted to run around town vehicle for my wife. It is getting a new engine, might get another 25 years out if it.

Can see how people get the bug of buying the latest and greatest, I finally break down and buy a new vehicle, that is all I can look at now. Keep on looking at full-sizes and travel trailers…but certainly could make my 3G Tacoma work. Hell, dream of mine is to live off a motorcycle.

As @Chris(NJ) was saying, we live on a planet with finite resources. We are living in strange times…being yelled at and guilted into saving the planet, all the while being told to consume even more. Seems oxymoronic. Though if you just glance at geology book, you would realize the planet has been worse than humans, we are nothing more than a surface nuisance.

I understand that. But capitalism won't be stopping anytime soon. The only thing that will stop mass consumption is to not consume as much and be more aware of what we consume. I tend to keep items long term and my Land Cruiser will be 30 in two years 12 of those under my ownership. The previous owner decided to never change the oil or coolant so i am left to pick up the pieces of his laziness. I will continue to own it until I can't physically climb into it anymore. But that's me.

Capitalism isn’t a horrible thing either, has brought millions out of poverty, and continues to do so. While not perfect, but what is? Know I am far from perfect, and I am ok with that.

There is also, we only live once…have to enjoy ourselves, sure some eggs will need to be broken. Everyone draws a line in sand of what they think is right. Think my wife and I live modestly, but some would see it as excessive and others might think it isn’t enough. There was a time I didn’t even own a television for years, never felt the need. Friends of mine made fun of me…told them I rather read or listen to music. Now hopelessly addicted to the internet and arguing over inanimate objects with 4 wheels. Lol!

Man, I’ve been to the local dumps so many times and I’m amazed at the amount of shit that’s there. It’s fucking insane.

People just throw shit out without even thinking about it. I try to reuse/recycle as much as I can. Had same coffee mug for 4 years now haha.

I just look at these super wealthy and powerful elite who are telling me to live a more responsible life and see their big yachts, fleets of supercars, watches that cost as much as a California mortgage, beach houses that use more electricity in a day than I do in an entire month and I think I’m going to be fine buying a new car or truck every 6 to 7 years.
