Just took my 2013 in for its first scheduled service (4700 miles). Took it to my local Toyota dealer under the 2 year maintenance warranty. One service guy said I don't need to change the factory synthetic oil til 10k. Then the service manager stepped in and said for 2012 and 2013 v6 Tacomas synthetic oil must be changed every 5k service interval, although 10k intervals for synthetic oil changes are ok for pre 2012s and 2014 and newer. This sounds a bit strange. Is there some part of the 2012-2013 v6 engines that are suspect?

Any input from the forum on this? Or better yet another Toyota trained tech?

Best thing to do, before taking someones word on an oil change interval, is to send in some samples, at different mileages.

The least amount of times the have to change your oil...the better for them,
    thats why they say 10k.

Who cares, go every 5k that's what mine is. Even if it was 10k, if it's free to change every 5k keep em changing it lol.

I can't wait until I change my own, I hate other people touching my vehicles...

Thanks everyone. Will stick to the 5k intervals and will probably stick with synthetic.

I just had a similar experience. On Saturday I brought my 2014 dcsb v6 in to the dealer at 5k miles. They bring it in the back and (an hour later) come out and tell me that there is no covered oil change until 10k miles because the 0w-20 synthetic is certified for 10k miles. I was a bit skeptical but had someplace to go so didn't push it.

Today I looked at the service manual and see the v6's use 5w-30, with a recommended interval of 5k. I call toyota just to make sure and they confirm. Call the dealer again and they assure me that synthetic only needs to be changed every 10k miles. After I ask whether the truck came with synthetic from the factory, I'm put on hold for five minutes, and eventually the guy comes back apologizing for the mistake, and that the oil should be changed every 5k miles.

I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt that it was an honest mistake, though more likely they are just trying to get out of providing 3 of the 5 toyota care oil changes before 25k miles.

BEWARE, some of the dealer service departments are idiots. I had a similar experience. I took my 2013 V6 DC into the dealer for the 1st oil change at 5000 miles and the dealer told me that it had synthetic oil and didn't need to be changed until 10k miles.BS!!!!I called other dealers, the 2013 tacoma doesnt use synthetic oil. Look at your oil refill cap and if it says the type of oil is 5w30, then that is NOT synthetic, it is regular oil and needs to be changed at 5000 mile intervals. I suspect your service manager caught the error of the technician and just said that the 2013 synthetic needed to be changed at 5k intervals to save face.

Looks like they may be confusing the oil change schedule of the 4 cyls and the v6's. My boss just went in with his 2012 4cyl and was told 10k changes were called for.

So I took my 13 taco yesterday for its first 5k oil change too. Since my buddy works there he told me they use conventional but he hooked it up with synthetic for free.

He also told me my front right shock was leaking hydraulic fluid and I'd have to bring it back to get warranty repair. Here's the fu$k up thing, he told me that toyota techs are told not to advise customers of pending issues that involve warranty work. The customer basically has to be the one to notice the issue and bring the vehicle in for inspection. Only until then will they evaluate to the problem then perform the work under the warranty.

How Shady is that? My buddy basically covered his back and told me to just bring it back. But that if I was any other customer he would have not advised me of the issue.

Your V-6 oil cap says ow-20? Toyota should just make it 5K across the board and stop confusing everybody.

See attachment, I got this from my dealer.

First couple of changes they suggest pretty quick then to slow down after. Just to add some perspective. Hope it helps.

10k for the Tundra with synthetic. Never heard of 10k for the Taco. Manual was 5k for my Taco and that's when they always did it.

my dealership is run by dummies. I took it for the free oil changes until I couldnt take it anymore because no matter what I did, even if I had a reservation, it would take them hours to change my oil. So I just do it myself, and switched to synthetic. Am I throwing away free oil changes? YES, but to me its worth it because I think they are terrible at what they do and should be ashamed to call themselves mechanics, even if it is because they are making money by doing paying customers first. They act like its brain surgery or something.

Why can't people quit asking the same questions about oil change intervals over and over on here and just pick up their vehicle manual and follow the recommendations of Toyota?

    It's so absurd...
