Right now the difference in prices vs gas and diesel are 1.05 cents. So according to my calculations you would have to get 10 mpg better with a diesiel to be spending the same amount for fuel as a gas engine.

Why don't you get the 1500 ecoDiesel?
I would say 50% because it's more representative, back when gas was 3.50 a dollar more for diesel wouldn't have been AS outrageous.

Toyota is not going to offer the same engine as the gen 2. Why do people keep speculating that? They have gone on the record saying the power train will be new.
Whether that means a brand new engine or a tweaked 4.0 remains to be seen.

    Do not do that.

source: Ram 1500 ecodiesel owner, truck in shop at 8k miles for exhaust in cab and oil in coolant overflow.

    But 28mpg highway in a 4wd ogre is kick-ass.

I guess I was bragging it up. I never claimed it was reliable, because I was always skeptical of that, but the interior and capabilities while achieving stellar fuel economy are still impressive. Damn shame the reliability isn't there.

If it didn't have these problems, and I felt like it'd be safe to own outside of factory warranty, I wouldn't even be tagging along to see what the next Tacoma winds up being. I think it's possible that Ram has improved overall but this engine... or the parts attached to it... suck a fat one.

Are these issues proving to be common with this engine? I really loved the idea of the Ram EcoDiesel when it came out but was just too afraid. A Chrysler with a Fiat engine? How can that go wrong?

Its too bad because the demand for such a truck is clearly there.

We're getting off topic, but it's not like the release of the new Tacoma is happening today. One of my customers has an Ecodiesel at work. He's also having exhaust related issues. I'm guessing there's a few kinks to work out with the truck. Typical Dodge IMHO.

I was giving him bad advice on purpose. :p But it was strange that he said, "If no one else offers diesel I'll go with GMC"....

Sorry to hear about your Ram. Does 28 MPG hwy justify the 10k diesel package?

    It's not 10K for the diesel. It's 3K more than the V8.

Quote from the MSN Autos page:

    "Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma is one of the longest standing production vehicles on sale today. To say it’s due for an update is a bit of an understatement. An all-new model will debut at Detroit packing a new 3.5-litre V6 motor and new Tundra-lite styling. Is it enough to give the new Chevy Colorado a run for its money?"

If their info is accurate, there's your motor.

I just hope they display it in a couple colors and packages to get a better idea of what they'll look like.
