Friend of mine is weighing buying a TRD vs. ZR2.

ZR2 is a gas v6 with 1500 miles for $33,900 while a new Tacoma cost roughly that.

How's resale and reliability of the Colorado's from you guys experience?

Just look on KBB for resale on the Tacoma. It’s enough to not even question a Colorado. Tacoma hands down

Kind of a silly post to stick on a forum called TacomaWorld.com, that said I don’t blame you for doing some research but just expect very biased answers based simply on your audience.

I don’t mean this as bragging so please don’t take it that way, but I can afford to own most any truck made today, I’m sure others on here can as well. My previously truck was a 2500 Power Wagon, and before that a 10A Rubicon Unlimited, needless to say I like nice off road vehicles. I drive a 2017 OR now and have never been happier. I looked at a ZR2 Deisel but went Tacoma. They’re just great trucks no question.

A lot of guys on here bash the Gen 3’s, I’ve owned both (2010 OR) and the Gen 3 is great. You really can’t miss.

As I said. There’s your biased answer.

Actually all bias aside, I took both out last fall for a test ride. There was nothing about the ZR2 that would make one not buy it except for it's potential resale value or lack of. It was a nice ride. It was hard to compare that day as the Tacoma I took out had some issues.

I personally like the looks of the Tacoma more and the resale can't be beat. That said, test drive both yourself and see which one you like.

I have to say, I don't know about the ZR2 but there was a time when Toyota made really good vehicles, I think that ship has sailed.

I have a friend that has the 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR with the diesel. Once he saw my TRD Sport with more options that his had and how my truck sat (looks). He wished he would have went and test drove the tacoma. You could tell he was jealous, cause for about 2 weeks all he wanted to do was talk about my truck and he was always doing research on the 2 trucks comparing them. So, my suggestion, test drive both models, see what really fits YOU!!

Ride in a 4 year old Chevy, then a 4 year old Toyota side by side. The Toyota resale value makes all the sense on the world at that point.

I do not know why anyone would even consider a Chevy or Ford over a Toyota. First and foremost is reliability. There is no comparison. Then there is resale and depreciation. All american vehicles are great when they are new. You then have them for a while and they go downhill. Things start to rattle and become loose after time. If I needed a full size truck I would definitely go with a tundra also. Just my 2 cents.

Coming to a Tacoma website to ask how a competitors truck is? You probably would be better off asking "How do you like your Tacoma?" And not say anything about the ZR2. I mean almost none of us has tried a ZR2 to give you any meaningful feedback.

That being said, I'll give you my honest thoughts.

I'm a Chevy guy. Owned quite a few GM rear wheel drive vehicles. If I was buying full-size, that's likely what I'd buy.

I sat in a Colorado, but did not drive one. I drove the Taco and felt the interior was fit a little bit better. I wasn't sure I was going to stay in a mid size or not, so I went with the Taco due to resale value.

I think either would be a good little truck and go 300k if you take care of it. I do wonder if the GM would provide a better driving experience due to how Toyota has this drive by wire throttle response programmed. The Taco will scoot, but you really got to give it the gas. Of idle response is meh.

Overall though, I like the truck and have no plans to sell it. It does have it's quirks though.

Why is someone selling the Chevy after only having 1500 miles?

Well the first item of concern is the lack of a manual trans for the ZR2. The resale/reliability as mentioned above would be the main points tho. I was actually looking at a ZR2 yesterday...salesmen tells me "yea Toyota copied off our zr2 for their tacoma."....ok? not gonna bother. for once I can actually say the interior in the Toyota is nicer imo then the chev..some fisher price shit goin on inside the ZR2. Can lock the front diff? Also didn't see any drum brakes so that might excite some lol

If you want a more capable truck out of the box for trails with minimal/no modification nessescary go with that zr2. If you care about resale value in a few years go with the Tacoma. What’s your priorities in terms of the vehicle?

I won't buy stuff from a company that built nearly 35 plus years of junk. I'm sure they'll auto flush again

I’m curious to know why a ZR2 is more capable off-road stock than a Tacoma?

The op has asked between a Zr2 and a trd off-road. The zr2 has twin lockers, bigger tires, better shocks, an engine with more horsepower and torque and a way better stock skid plate. The zr2 is much more a competitor to the TRD pro, not the trd off-road.
