Time to get new tires and it goes without saying I won't be getting the stock Dunlops again. My question is, is there any compelling reason to get 5 new tires? My spare is unused and I can't think of good reason not to keep it as the spare and not spend the $ for the 5th tire.

Just keep the spare tire it will get you by in an emergency. Just do the most overlooked thing make sure it has air in it every now an then.

As long as the new tires are the same size as the spare keep it. If they are a different size (height wise) and you use the spare you can seriously damage your differential.
I actually bought a new factory wheel for the spare to match my stock wheels and now I incorporate my spare in all tire rotations so as not to waste the price of that tire by letting it just hang on the spare tire rack.
